Our core temperature needs to drop to trigger our sleep hormones. If we’re too hot, our body doesn't think it’s time to go to sleep yet, so it keeps our brain alert. Ideally, the bedroom should be 19 degrees (67F) - the optimal temperature for sleep.

(Thanks for radio FM 98.1 for the above!)

How To Pick The Perfect Watermelon

• It should feel heavy for its size.
• The rind should be shiny and firm.
• Look for the yellow spot on the watermelon - that's where it was resting on the ground. This spot is originally white, but turns yellow as the sugars develop, so a yellow spot mean it's sweet!

FYI - because it has so much water, watermelon has a low glycemic load, meaning it doesn't raise blood sugar levels quickly. (The high GI is based on 5 cups of watermelon, not an actual serving size of 1 cup. The low GL means one serving of watermelon doesn't contain much carbohydrate, because it is actually mostly water. The low GL indicates that a serving of watermelon won't have much impact on your blood sugar.)

If you're in need of better sleep, try putting gerbera daisies in your bedroom. While most plants release oxygen during the day, gerbera daisies release it at night, so they can help you get a better night's sleep. A study by NASA found that gerbera daisies remove a chemical from the air that is linked to headaches and eye irritation. Just put the flowers by a window during the day, because they do need sun.

A recent study says that performing random acts of kindness may improve your health. Putting the well-being of others first, without expecting anything in return, stimulates the reward centers of the brain - and this leads to what they call a helper's high . Volunteering, donating, over-tipping and giving genuine compliments are all great ways to be kind, and in turn, help yourself feel better.

Plants Reduce Stress

If you have a stressful job, try putting a potted plant near your workspace, because a small plant can go a long way toward relieving stress. While it has been commonly assumed that plant life is soothing to those in stressful or mundane situations, a study out of the University of Hyogo in Japan scientifically verifies the degree of psychological and physiological impact induced by indoor plants.

If it works for the office, it must work at home as well...

Keep Your Eyes Healthy Working From Home

1. Move so you're closer to a window. More natural light helps.
2. Set alarms to take regular screen breaks. Remember the 20-20-20 rule. That's where you stare at something that's 20 feet away for 20 seconds, every 20 minutes.
3. Use eye drops - just check the label and make sure you don't overuse them. Especially if they're prescription eye drops.
4. Have a good desk lamp for when the light isn't good. Poor lighting can cause headaches, irritability, and even make you less productive.
5. Stay about two feet from your computer screen. Any closer than that is harder on your eyes.

75% of people report getting a better night's sleep on fresh sheets - and if your laundry detergent has the faint smell of lavender, even better. According to the National Sleep Foundation, people who smell a lavender scent before bed sleep more deeply and feel more energized in the morning.

Researchers have found that flossing your teeth can help your memory. Flossing prevents gum disease, which prevents stiff blood vessels, which cause memory issues.

That's right, scientists have found that stiffened blood vessels are linked to a risk of greater memory problems. Experts suggest brushing, flossing and regular trips to the dentist keep your smile bright and your memory sharp.

Mashing potatoes causes 25% more sugar to be released into our blood, because mashing breaks open starch granules, releasing extra starches that turn into sugar. It’s just like how eating apple sauce releases more sugar than a whole apple. Bottom line: the less manipulated or broken down a food is, the less sugar is released when it’s digested.

One of the healthiest ways to eat potatoes is in it's purest form: whole and baked with the skin on. Baking can minimize cooking loss of nutrients. Potatoes can be baked whole or they can be baked cut up like French fries. Baking cut up potatoes is a healthier alternative to French fries.

You just tried it, didn't you LOL!

It is because when you hum, you are actually exhaling, so if both your mouth and your nose is closed, the air can't escape. ... So, although you can hum for a very brief few second or two, you will be forced to open your mouth and catch your breath.

One reason everyone complains about the quality of airplane food is because your sense of taste and smell decrease 30% (and some claim up to 50%) during high altitude flights.

Caused by lack of humidity, lower air pressure, and the background noise inside the plane.

When you sneeze, the particles ejected out of your nostrils are traveling at 100 miles per hour. This is faster than the maximum run speed of a cheetah which is roughly 70-75 miles per hour. And that one sneeze can travel from 19 to 26 feet.

These two facts should help everyone understand why wearing a mask in these Covid-19 times is so very important.

Normally, proper sneezing etiquette is to:
1. Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze
2. Throw used tissues in the trash.
3. If you don't have a tissue, cough or sneeze into your elbow, not your hands.

But, these are not normal times and extra precautions are needed hence the wearing of a mask will help protect you from the virus, and at the same time, wearing a mask will help protect others around you especially if you are sick.

Do you talk with your hands? According to the book The Winner’s Brain, hand gestures help boost our memory, because when we speak and gesture, we’re encoding memories verbally and physically, which improves our ability to recall them later.

A new study touts the benefits of honey for treating common coughs and colds. Experts at Oxford University found that honey was better at relieving coughs, sore throats and congestion, with no harmful side effects. On average -- honey was 36 per cent more effective at reducing cough frequency and cut cough severity by 44 per cent or more.

It also appeared to reduce the time it takes to recover from a cough or cold by up to two days. The study's authors hope using honey for upper respiratory tract infections could reduce the overprescription of antibiotics.

When exercising, remember your sweat level does not indicate calories burned. Because sweat’s #1 job is to cool the body & some bodies need more cooling than others. But if you’re fit, your efficient muscles may produce less sweat – no matter how hard you exercise.

Fresh snow absorbs sound. As snowflakes stack up, there’s more space left between them. With all that space, sound is unable to bounce off snow as easily as hard surfaces – and that’s why it gets so quiet when it snows. If the surface melts and refreezes, the snow becomes smooth and hard. Then the surface will help reflect sound waves.

Short Exercise - 'Exercise Snacking'

Forget the gym! The quickest way to get back in shape after the holidays could be short bursts of physical activity throughout the day. Scientists say so-called "exercise snacking" better controls blood sugar than one longer, continuous workout.

James Brown is a lecturer in biology and biomedical science at Aston University. He says these studies collectively highlight the importance of making sure we keep active throughout the day and increasing the amount of energy we use up in non-exercise activities that we normally do during everyday life, from walking up stairs to playing musical instruments.

Fidgeting Is Good Medicine!

When you are sitting for a long stretch, like at work or on a flight, experts advise walking every hour to reduce the risk of dangerous blood clots. But fidgeting may be a good alternative. In a University of Missouri study people who sat for 3 hours but tapped one foot for 60 seconds every 4 minutes had an increase in blood flow in that leg that was enough to prevent a decline in arterial function, a risk factor for blood clots.

An added bonus:

So fidget! Fidget at your desk, fidget at the bus stop, fidget anywhere you are! Just FIDGET!!!
