Has anyone heard about them doing a diabetic friendly diet? Most sites all seem to say the same thing. See your nutritionist. I have done that and changed my calories/carbs to her recommendation. I'm losing weight, but my BS levels haven't changed much in the last 3 months... ?? They are better than when I was diagnosed but I thought they would drop more once I started counting calories and carbs...

I use a Mac at home too, but I run Parallels which gives you a window in which you can run Windows applications. Way back when (version 4), MasterCook came in Mac AND Windows flavors and I really was sorry when they dropped Mac support.

There are other recipe software applications out there that some folks love. I don't want to oversell MasterCook--it's just what I've been using for years and am familiar with. I do like its shopping list and menu planning features, but they haven't really updated the user interface in years and its looking a bit dated.

I have a Mac, but have Visionware which makes it PC-like in order to use PC programs (like downloading my meter for my doctor.) I'm going to look for some Macware first, but I have a hunch I'll go with the Mastercook because it seems to be the favored "tried and true." What great help! Thanks!

That's what I use, Master Cook. I had version 5 and upgraded to V9, but that's the one that would not install properly. Will have to try the google this weekend.

Thanks so much.

I use MasterCook. It's a tried and true recipe software package that's been around forever. (I've been using it for at least 10 years.) You can get it everywhere online for cheap. Just be careful that you aren't buying an old version. The current version is version 9. You can also buy it online from the manufacturer, Valuesoft at valuesoft.com or you can find it at places like Best Buy or Costco for around $20.

I am using Windows XP, and I've heard you have to Google MasterCook installation to find out how to install it on Vista--a couple of workarounds apparently.

There are many other programs available, though, some for the Macintosh as well.

Oh, and there is a Recipe Builder on this site that gives you the nutritional info for your recipes. But my philosophy is that web sites come and go, and since I've been using some of my recipes for over 30 years, I prefer to keep them on my very own computer where I can back them up for posterity.

That sound great. What kind of software do you use, and where did you get it?

Trouble with some software, they might not work on newer systems with Vista. I was using one software but when I tried to install on this newer computer (it is about 1 year old), it wouldn't install because of the newer OS. Other software I tried, was not very user-friendly or easy to use.

Maybe this will help some folks.

What I've done for years is use recipe software on my computer. That gives me complete nutritional info on all of my recipes (thousands of them after 30 years of cooking!). One of the online cookbooks I've created in this software is favorite recipes that I make over and over for dinner (about 100 of them)--I just rotate through them so we don't eat the same thing too often.

When I track, I just add each recipe into the nutrition tracker as a new food. Once its entered with its nutritional info, it's easy to add it to my daily plan whenever we eat it.

Personally, I don't like preset food plans. I didn't like them on Weight Watchers either. I love to cook for my family and I've made a lot of effort over the years to work over my family recipes into something healthier and lower fat/carb. THAT's what I want on my tracker.

I work full time (and have a two-hour commute every day), so I understand the point that tracking takes time, but since I eat the same thing every day for breakfast and usually the same thing for lunch and snacks, all I have to do is copy my meals from day to day and then pop in my dinner recipes.

Works for me and I get to eat what I like!

Go to your nutrition page and then to the "Add a Food". From the pop up window, click on the far right "Food Groupings" and begin to add one food at a time that is in your recipe. It will add them all together and figure things out for you. You will have to figure out what your serving size is, though. They will also want you to name your Food Grouping (recipe). Sometimes, the button you have to click on is "Next" to get you to the following steps. Good luck!

Their is a way to make your own recipes and add them as a group, I don't know how to do it, I know that would help me especially with my Grandma's recipes that are in my head.

Sparkguy actually emailed me (I initiated the email) regarding this. He said he was really happy for the great feedback and that it is something they have in the works for the future, but didn't know when it would happen. In the meantime, we don't have much choice but to keep plugging our own choices into the nutrition page. It takes forever, doesn't it? I know I'm not alone with this wish for a diabetic diet. I've been in touch with someone else about this very topic. If you come up with any good ideas, let me know!

HOORAY AND THANK YOU!!!! It just takes so much time to make all these separate groupings of our own foods on the nutrition logging page. That's what I'm doing now. Just really time consuming and soon I'll be back to work and just won't have the time to do this much computer work.

I wrote to Spark Guy yesterday and asked if they could look at the menu plan for SP and maybe make one for diabetics. I would be willing to follow that myself. So cross your fingers all that something happens.

I've noticed that the meal plan is often much too high in carb for what I can seem to tolerate. Even my snacks have to be balanced with a little protein. I'm fairly new here, so it was good for me to read that others have similar concerns.

I plan all my meals for the week on Sunday and put them in the tracker, that way all I have to do is to change if I don't eat that. If you have time pick a day and do that.

I agree. It would be so much better for me if Spark had a diabetic friendly mealplan option.

I hate the time it takes to log everything in and so often do not track like I should.

Thanks for the tips. I was hoping that SP would have a "recommended" meal ideas for diabetics. I realize they do not, but it would be nice for them to do.

I for one need to see how others do it to keep their diabetes in check and lose the weight. I am not doing very well at coming up with my own plan.

Several of you seem to have the same or similar questions but I did not see an answer posted.

Spark People does NOT recommend diabetics to use their meal plans. You should make your own meals according to your doctor/nutritionist recommendations, and track them in the nutritional tracker by adding each food or meal.

If you make the same meal frequently, you can save the entire meal as a favorite and enter all the items in together at the same time, to make for easier tracking. I am still trying to figure out how to use the recipe calculator and add foods not already in the database, so at the moment I cannot give you any further details.

However, I have gone into my nutrition tracker and where it says to "Change Nutritional Goals", I have been able to edit the number of calories for the day, as well as the number of carbs, fat and protein to make it more in line with what I should have. It is not perfect, but it is closer to targets than it was before.

Hi, OregonGrandma here...

I want to know how to do that too. I am diabetic I do not like or cannot eat the foods that SP has set up for me. I would like to have a diabetic meal plan if there is such a thing. When you find out how to change that into our food plan/tracker, please share it with me at my SparkPage or SparkMail...

Thanks
Linda

I would like to know how I can change my meal plan to diabetic as I didn't check it when I first started. I think it would be a great help to have the meal plans. Is there a way to change it without having to delete and start all over again?

Where did you get the calorie plan from? I try to keep my calories in the 1400-1600 range but find sometimes it still sends my blood glucose up. I was told by the dietician to eat around 35-60 grams of carbs per meal and tonight for the first time I tracked it eating two flour tortilla's (which is about 30 grams of carb) and my BG went up 4 instead of staying with the 3 limit level increase. I now know not to eat two but maybe cut back to a smaller size.

I have a queston about the meal plan from sparks. When I first started I hadn't been diagnosed as diabetic so I didn't check that on the list. Is there a way to go back and change the profile or whatever to diabetic so that the meals suggestions are more inline? I am assuming that this is a different question than the one below about tracking the BS readings.

BTW I am following an old diabetic 1500 calorie plan from the 70's and it's working for me. I also have the book DTour from Prevention which has some up-to-date information and 2 weeks of meal plans.

Hi, I am from Canada. My diabetic nutritionist says that to get the same number as the States to multiply our number by 18. So, if your meter said 7.3 it would be the equivalent to 131.4

In the States you would be considered as a pre-diabetic and watched very closely for it to tip into diabetes. Yes, you are right the older you get the harder it is to control your blood sugars. Insulin is a homorne and we know what our homornes do as we age.

In Canada we go by millimoles. I wish our countries would measure things the same. It would make it so much easier for so many things. If we had 100 we would be dead!
I must research what this is all about so I have a better understanding. For us 4-8 is considered normal 4-7 is ideal before meals and less than 10, 2 hours after meals is good with 8 at bedtime being acceptable. This is of course for anyone that is not taking insulin or any other medication for diabetes. If I lived in the states I would be considered normal and not diabetic but in Canada I have been diagnosed with type 2. I take no medication and control only with diet and exercise. I hope to be able to continue down this path for many years as I understand as we age it gets harder to control.
Thank you for answering my question.

In the United States we go by ml/dl and in Canada I think you go by something else. I do not know how to translate the two. 108 is a good reading for us and 180 fasting is a good reading also. Every doctor has his own set of numbers for their patients, I have found out, most doctors want their US patients to have a blood sugar as close to 100 as possible before eatting. I hope this helps you some.

It seems there are several people that would like to change their information from regular to diabetic. I too would like to know how to do it. I need to keep track of what is happening to my body when I eat different foods and of course my blood sugars. I am new to diabetes having been just diagnosed 3 months ago. I have also noticed that BG is measured differently in The States than it is in Canada so find it hard to follow what is normal. In Canada my BG ranges from 5.3 on fasting which is excellent and 15.3 two hours after eating Chinese food and that is too high. In the States I see people talk about 108, 180 and anything inbetween. Is that 10.8 to 18.0?
I have learned that this disease is personal and each individual is different but anything anyone has to say helps.

I am diabetic--diagnosed T2 about 5 years ago. I am still learning how different foods effect my body.I am always baffled; just when I think I finally understand it, I get a surprise again. I cannot eat any "white" foods; esp. white bread, white rice, white pasta, white potato. But carrots, sweet potato, brown rice, whole wheat bread/flours, squash, seem to be ok. This past week I have been having lots of low sugar readings--maybe because of the heat wave we were having. I don't know. But one evening I stopped for a cool, iced coffee (sugar free)w/a dash of cream and cinnamon...it took me two hours to sip on it--by 8:00 in the evening my blood sugar had dipped to 72! Not good for that time of night...Don't know why it did that. This is a strange disease...not a one size fits all solution.

I too am always looking for "menu ideas" from others. I live alone, am on a very tight social security budget and need to lose lots of weight.

Thanks to this team and SP I am finding some good ideas. I haven't used them yet but I will try them when I can.

Hi,
I am new to this team. I am not diabetic, but friends and family members of mine are. I am trying to learn more about cooking for people with diabetes, since I like to cook. I have been having trouble using this site to find the info that I am looking for. If anyone has tips on how to do that, I 'd love to learn more.

What I am trying to find out immediately is what roots are good for diabetics, because I have some good recipes for various roots. I know that starches should be avoided. Beets, carrots, turnips, and sweet potatoes (as well as butternut squash which could be cooked as a root) all are lower in starch than regular potatoes, but most of those contain sugar. Are they ok for people with diabetes?

Me too! I would like to know how to change my nutrition tracker to a diabetic diet; including daily bloodsugar readings...I would love to SEE one that is working for others; and then learn how to set one up for myself...Any help would be greatly appreciated...(I am not very computer savvy, so I need detailed instructions.)

I haven't been on here for quite a while either. I have been all over the site trying to figure out how to change my nutrition tracker to a diabetic diet. Also, I know they have a way to track your bloodsugar also. Can someone help me out?

I am sorry that I have not been on the boards. I got a little down and needed to take time for myself. Also the landlord wanted me to rearrange the apartment and get the uncompleted projects done. I am not going to read all the back posts, just starting as if a new person on SPARKS.
