Okay. We didn't do too bad in January, considering how many folks around here are just starting to get a feel for the team and its activities. I'm opening a new thread for February, 2015.

We'll keep the goal at 100 steps until more members decide they want to play. (But I still think we should be able to blow this goal number out of the water ... if are all a bit more generous with ourselves.)

If we don't acknowledge our own successes, who will?

30) I worked out my characters' ages, and the timeline of events for the overall story, with my husband on Saturday (because he's quick with the math.)

29) I went to the history museum with my husband on Sat, which entailed a lot of walking and climbing stairs for several hours. Good for my body and my mind :)

Okay, I like the attitude and the generosity. I can get very miserly and drill-masterish about these kinds of things, especially writing.

25) I have been listening to "The Invention of Wings," a novel which actually applies to the non-fiction I am working on, while I walk. My walks are getting longer and it has sparked some good questions and paths to pursue.

26) I am taking small breaks to clean when I need a little break from writing: Clean out a drawer, unload the dishwasher. Concrete, visible tasks help me enjoy the order when my work is still messy and disordered.

27) I am still celebrating my resisting a serious chocolate craving the other day.

28) I lost .4 pounds this week. Every little bit is encouraging.

You guys should be so much more generous with yourselves! :D We'll never get to 100 if you don't give yourselves more credit. I'm thinking ANY day that includes good writing / fitness / nutrition choices should be worth at least one step ... and often more.

Of course I should be doing better with checking in too. Once again, I'm catching up. I'm in my TOM, so I feel pretty lousy today, but I have done some good things in recent days. Here's what I can remember:

24) I took time to work on fiction on 7/8 last days (15th-22nd). It's just been tiny bits, but streaks of daily attention are good for the novel.

23) I took the stairs at work instead of the elevator.

22) I meditated for 20 minutes.

21) I listened to a couple of Inside Out Weight Loss podcasts. (Which I use to work on my health AND my writing goals.)

20) I did yoga for at least 20 minutes -- though I wasn't timing it.

19) I established a "rule" that the living room becomes a "yogatation room" after my husband goes to bed. That means I close the doors entering into it, turn down the lights, listen to a new, relaxing playlist, and give myself time and space to do meditation and/or restorative yoga.

18) I went for my third writerly walk this month, though it had to be in two pieces. (Around the edges of an appointment.)

#17 My month of January started out with an upper respiratory infection and it has taken almost 2 weeks to get over it, I still to do something every day no matter if it is walking 5000 steps a day. emoticon

(I've had a little sprint in the last few days, but am reporting them all at once.)

16) A serendipitous step: at work tonight, I decided to listen to a podcast while folding laundry. It's a true crime story called Serial. It's turning out to be really helpful as I think about what my reporter/true crime novelist character would be doing for research.

15) I checked in here at Fit to Write tonight, and tweaked as needed. (Getting the notification that a teammate had added some steps inspired me to come in and do the same, and to see what else might need doing!)

14) I used music to amp myself up on purpose on Tuesday. It was an antidote to the winter doldrums, which are terrible for me as a writer. I listened to the most intense stuff I have for a long time and let my emotions just surge. I cried. I danced. I got all het up about my goals. It's a cheap trick, but it really seemed to kick-start my creativity.

13) I went for a writerly walk on Tuesday ... even though it was bloody cold!

12) I took time to write fiction on Mon.

11) I took time to write fiction on Tues.

10) I took time to write on fiction on Wed.

8. Sometimes I just have 15 or 20 minutes between whatever appointments and whatnot. I have been jumping on my chapter anyway. Every little bit helps and I feel better for every 15 minutes I work.

9. I am letting myself do a messy draft right now - I can tidy it up later. I really want a complete draft to work with. I can be very exacting and sometimes that impedes real progress. I'm letting loose with the words and ideas.

7) This evening, I turned away from the TV and the easy choice and got into a bath and exfoliated the heck out of myself, and did all that other futzy personal grooming stuff that I've been neglecting, so that I can get a good start to the week.

PS: I wish there was a way to like each other's steps.

1) I deliberately included some quiet, non-screen time in my day. Instead of staying busy, I allowed myself to just think about what steps I need to take to make progress, and what needs to happen in my story.

I saw something like this on another team page, and I loved the idea. The rules were a little different there but here's my version:

Anyone on the team, at any time can come to this thread and make note of one positive step they took. Ideally each step will be in the direction of better health and more productivity.

Each step will be numbered. The first person to post will take the first step and number it as "1)". The next person to post would number their step as THE NEXT CONSECUTIVE NUMBER. So If you come in and see that, say, 10 steps have already been taken by teammates, you would list your step as #11.

I'll start the thread, but here are some ideas for additional steps. (Your step does not need to be original ... If you are journaling once a week, you could take a step on behalf of the team each week with the same task. Does that make sense?)

Examples:
1) I went for a Writerly Walk.
2) I set a timer and got up to stretch after 1 hour of writing time.
3) I ate a bowl of grapes (instead of chips) as my writing snack.
4) I finished a chapter!
5) I went to bed without TV so I could think about my plot.
6) I SCHEDULED writing time into my planner.
7) And so on.

What do you think? Can we get to 100 steps in the rest of January?
