I started a Facebook Page called Sparking Seniors and Friends for anyone who wishes to keep in touch as SparkPeople dies.

I also joined a Facebook group called Panena's Intermittent Fasting. It looks like a great bunch of people and I would recommend it to anyone here looking for a place to land.

I go for a morning walk (and stretch) every morning (usually starting between 5/5:30 am). When I'm done, I sit awhile and listen to the birds too - I too find it all very relaxing.

I had a good feeling from a phone call.

My 11 year old grandson called me to say that he was selected as
"The Student of The Month" in his school.
He was so happy , I am so proud of him and it made me smile all day that he cared enough to call.

Wow, that sounds like a lovely place to live -- we lived on a farm (1/4 section) for a few years in the 90s and I loved the seclusion. But my husband found the commute just a bit too far.

The local park I walk in is about 30 minutes away from me. Not really far considering EVERYTHING is far from me. My closest grocery store is about 45 minutes away.
We live up in the hills ( higher elevation) and it is a quiet heavily wooded area 30 minutes from our town. Not too far but we are secluded.

Instead of sitting in front of the TV I took a 5 mile walk today outside. That was good for me!

But what did you do, JOHAL, to reward yourself for those good behaviors?

It is those REWARDS that keep us doing the things that we know we ought to do for our health -- but don't find directly rewarding.

I started this thread hoping to tease out instances that would help EVERYone learn to VERY CLOSELY link up behavior then reward. Or, as SUNSHINE clearly does -- choose to engage in healthy behaviors that ARE rewards themselves (yay ZUMBA!)

This was the first day of the rest of my life. Corny, yeah, but if it helps me feel better about myself, then I'll take it.

What did I do today?
1. Tracked my nutrition and stayed within my goals.
2. Drank my water.
3. Hit my exercise goals
4. Did some upper body exercises.

How do I feel? I feel great!

Daily affirmation:
I will befriend my mind and give it what it needs. It takes courage to be the person I am, to fulfill my odd & unique possibilities. I will seek courage.

It has become a bit like carrying on two conversations at once but I'm easy either way! If we close this thread we should still remember to post "the good for us" things that we do each day or whenever we do them.

As a PRIOR LEADER of THIS TEAM (before it renamed itself):
When I started this thread, I intended that it should have 2 functions:

1. become a reference list of rewarding behaviors that we could peruse from time to time. I wanted that we could become re-energized by new ideas for rewarding ourselves for continuing to engage in daily healthy habits that can sometimes be hard to establish.
2. that the act of posting a rewarding behavior daily (a chance to boast, perhaps?) could itself become a reward and thus continue to reinforce healthy behavior.

I never intended it to replace or compete with the "chat" thread. I never thought this thread would be so popular and continue for so long -- which makes me feel SO proud.....

But.... I've viewed and reviewed the posting here for a long time (it's my baby!) and I think this thread no longer serves its intended function. Worse, I think it tends to subtract from the "chat" thread which is (or I think should be!) the main unifying platform of the team. So while painful for me ----

I propose that this thread be closed.

It turns out -- I realized yesterday -- that I actually went trick-or treating on Halloween! emoticon
My favorite consignment store was having a discount day and "party" for customers/clients and they had asked everyone to feel free to come in costume and enjoy drinks and (obviously) Halloween candy while shopping. I had to pick up some of my consignments at the store anyway; and I've got a costume (or 2 or 3! as you'd guess if you've looked at my SparkPage!)... so why NOT have a little fun running a necessary errand?

It turns out that they were also giving way free unclaimed clothing to those who "are affected by the Calwood Fire." Ummmm, that would be me! I enjoyed my little outing and came home with a couple pieces of candy in my handbag AND some free clothes in a shopping bag! I think I MET all the specifications: costume, mask, candy in a bag...... and a real treat!

Honestly, it's been 50 YEARS! Now I feel bad that I didn't actually SAY "Trick or TREEEEAT!"

I love to binge-watch on Netflix -- have done it many times.

But right now I am binge reading. I just finished Mary Trump's book (fascinating read) and I'm about to start one of Danielle Steel's latest.

The sun-room is clean; its slate floor looks good after all the work we did to remove water marks and scratches and re-seal it. And all my potted plants are moved back in for the winter, pruned and groomed, and in their right spots. (Just moving in the plants took ALL day!)

KD, that is VERY good advice and I'm trying to follow it! Yes -- stay on the high road whenever possible!

Actually, MM and I are sharing this house and getting along surprisingly well. Still, it will be nice to finally split belongings and part ways. I'm not sure of the steps I need to go through in getting a divorce. He seems to be doing nothing!

Koshie I'm so sorry you're dealing with all of that right now - but I'm so happy your house survived and you as well.

Dealing with a divorce at the same time (and it sounds like he's still living there too) must make it so much harder. Please take care of yourself.

Your order of business is now different with MM not in the picture. Take him into consideration AFTER yourself and your daughter. But take the high road as much as you can. The view is better from up there, and you will feel better about yourself down the way.

Thank you, Bev. I do appreciate your sympathy and understanding -- and telling me (the one who didn't understand why!) -- my tears.

It was DIFFERENT fire that sprang up very close by and very quickly raged out of control. It caught us (and I believe -- everyone!) TOTALLY by surprise since we were all accustomed to smelling and seeing smoke after almost a month of smelling and seeing heavy smoke from other fires.......
Very much stress to run for your life and not know if you can return.... I've much more empathy for refugees now. I've rested and relaxed for a day and a half, and had some very good sleep, and I feel better. Better enough that I've GOT to at least clean up the kitchen! Maybe not much more..... if not today, then tomorrow.... Whole house smells of smoke and is a mess from our tearing it apart as we searched for "essentials" to grab before leaving.

I made the effort to bring back from the hotel the (what turned out to be a) very large amount of soup that I had made that last day there. Lauren and I had eaten some that last night there and it was okay -- not great -- but then, it was just leftovers thrown together without all the spices and "magic" that I always have at home.
Once back here, I spent some time saute-ing up a large pan of savory veggies and added the spices and magic and they turned the bland soup into what I call a very delicious Gratitude Stew. As far as I'm concerned, Thanksgiving Day came early! And there's enough for 3-4 more meals! Even MORE gratitude! We'll be eating that until it is gone.

Wow! Koshie you have really been through it lately. Take your time putting your life back in order and take time for you. You don't have to do it all at once. I can't imagine the stress you have been under but I know the feeling of relief that brings tears when the stress is over. I wish we could all be there to help.

For those of you who don't have time to read such a long post (believe me I understand!):
1. my house came 50 yards from being burnt down
2. I've spent the last week sheltering with my family in a hotel room
3. this was even MORE difficult because on July 29th, my husband asked me for a divorce. I just couldn't bring myself to "put it out there" before now.

At 2:30 Saturday 17th, we received a message to immediately evacuate the house due to immediate fire danger. What we didn't know at the time was that NEW fire had sprung up nearby and was spreading VERY rapidly. Deputies showed up at 3 to make sure that we were gone. So we had 30 minutes to gather the essentials of our lives..... I was upstairs and didn't know they'd come. DD and MM (formely known as DH) left and I didn't know that for awhile either. But I stayed until 4:30 gathering what I could and throwing it into my car..... I fled about 10 minutes after I saw flames (what I judged to be slowly) approaching our house on the back of our property. I did also see an incredibly dense black, large cloud of smoke immediately to the north of our house. I never saw any fire fighting efforts, but there were plenty of police on the roads out preventing people from returning home. I stopped and told each one that there was fire on my property so that someone might tell the firefighters......

I later learned that I was the only one in our house that figured an emergency order of immediate evacuation meant that our house was in DIRE danger -- and so I stayed gathering enough clothes for a week, my valuables and pix and whatever else I felt had value, meaning -- and was small enough and sturdy enough to transport without packing -- and that I knew where it was! MM and DD gathered a few clothes for a couple days and a few things important to them and didn't worry about the house REALLY burning down so they left when the deputies showed up. I called them a couple times to ask what they left behind and really wanted, but all they said was "LEAVE NOW!" and I didn't really know what each of them valued most and that I could gather; so mostly it was just MY stuff that I took. I don't have a clue as to how to move my computer -- it isn't a laptop that I can just grab and go..... I attached the hoses to the outdoor faucets and turned on the water and left.

So I've been out-of touch as we sheltered in a hotel room for a week and MM went almost crazy with anxiety. He dealt with it by trying to stay on top of any possible info about the fire, while I of course had already given up the house as a total loss since I had seen the flames approach with no one to fight it. Stressful, but also -- shamefully emoticon , I also secretly felt a small measure of relief that everything was gone and I wouldn't have to deal with divvying up the property..... Mixed feelings.... Outwardly, I think I was very calm.

We came back yesterday (Saturday). Our house is UNTOUCHED by fire. The firefighters had a plane drop a wide strip of red slurry across our property and our neighbors'... and that is where the flames stopped -- about 50 yards away from the house. More -- it looks like it was a grass fire on our property -- fueled only by low-lying grass and shrubs and debris; the trees look like they will survive. Firefighters don't bother to defend indefensible properties -- our annual efforts to limb up trees and remove larger debris MADE A DIFFERENCE and our property and our immediate neighbors homes got defended by slurry!!! The entire neighborhood immediately next to ours, only TWO houses away from mine, was burnt to the ground. Completely destroyed. Nothing salvageable even.

Suddenly I am in tears for the first time and I don't know why....

MM went home Friday to see what he could see and do what he could do. We'd discussed it beforehand and I expected him to come back to the hotel. He got the house up and running before today's (Sunday) snow (we feared frozen pipe and burst pipes flooding the house and ruining anything salvageable, etc.) because we had no power..... I know this is a confused report...
And then he called demanding that I speak to the hotel management and cancel our remaining reservations and get "credit" for Friday (despite it being almost 5 p.m.!), and pack up his and our stuff and return to what I knew would be a freezing cold home, and I'd already started a big pot of soup for dinner (we had a kitchenette in our room).... and I said NO and he got angry. So what. He stayed THERE and DD and I (and parrot Ginger!) stayed in our nice warm hotel room, with a nice warm dinner....

So DD and I spent a relaxed evening and a somewhat rushed morning by ourselves -- and got home by noon Saturday. I overheard MM telling DD in my presence (of course, so that I WOULD overhear) that his plans for the day were for us (that means DD and I) to vacuum ALL surfaces - even walls -- to hopefully get rid of the smoky smell. And then for some "mysterious" (yeah, sure, "mysterious"!) reason I got incredibly sore and tired and achy throughout my entire body. It was an effort to even walk. For real.
Yet I was amused too emoticon that MM was still trying to control what and when *I* would do something. Now, after a week of utter boredom and the "rest" of doing nothing in a hotel room, I was home and I weirdly yet DESPERATELY needed to relax and rest. I figured that it was accumulated stress that had my body hurting so much -- and since what MM wanted was something that NEEDS to be done and it was just that his timing was bad -- I respectfully and gently told him that, and that I'd try to do it tomorrow (which is today Sunday) but it just wasn't going to happen immediately! Surprisingly, he responded well to having his wishes thwarted once again.

I slept well last night; and I feel much better today. It is now almost 2:00 and I need to get started on cleaning the house, which we literally tore apart a week ago as we rushed to gather things and leave ASAP.

SO... there are a zillion and more things to do and I must begin. I doubt I will have much time in the near future to sit in front of the computer. This is why I tried here to give a complete report (however confused) in the time I had. We are all well and the house is whole too.

OH! Yes, despite everything, having a home to come back to makes it a GREAT weekend!

I finished the work on the floor. I got half my plants inside and covered up the plants remaining outside. Yay. emoticon SO tired.
I went for a drive today -- about 20 minutes of just driving around -- to keep the car "in shape."
Frankly that's about all I could handle today -- but it was restful and I got to see some fall color .

Thankfully, I went in the morning -- because by afternoon, there was/is SO MUCH SMOKE here that I can't see even my neighbor's house. emoticon

My basic Carnivore Bread recipe at this point is 600 gms of liquid egg whites to 1 pkg of ground turkey. I put them in my Vitamix (any food processor or blender would do) and add any spices I feel like. Then I take my big cookie sheet and line it with parchment paper and pour the mixture on it -- the mixture is a bit runnier than a cake batter would be. Then I bake it at 350 for at least a half-hour -- I'm still working on that part -- and slice it into squares. It's a bit eggy but it could be used for a sandwich of sorts. The same recipe can be used for waffles but it does make a lot of waffles so you might want to cut it in half.

Here is a youtube video using ground lamb and whole eggs so they will be slightly higher in fat than what I use.

www.youtube.com/watch?v=8KCM
sYBGs7Y

Here is a link to another video for making burger buns -- these are much higher fat and fussier to make but they may be a better texture. You need to scroll down for the video but it's all interesting.

I am thinking of adding some ground flaxseed to my basic recipe -- they won't be pure carnivore but they will still be low in net carbs -- I may have to add some water to get the right consistency since flaxseed absorbs so well. I'll let you know.

Carnivore "bread" products are usually a combination of ground meat and eggs (or egg whites) -- I have an order in at the library for Maria Emmerich's new book the Carnivore Cookbook.

And I have noticed there are several Carnivore Cookbooks on the market -- I'll have to check my library for more.

I am using ground turkey and egg whites for my experiments and so far everything is edible -- I used the same recipe and made waffles and a focaccia style bread. I continue to experiment and will probably try again on the weekend. These recipes certainly work for the "P:E Diet".
