Gmom, why do you worry about fiber? are you having trouble with constipation? if so, try cooking your protein in more fat, and using fat for flavor, such as butter on your veg and cooking your eggs in butter or bacon fat. I find that two eggs if scrambled will absorb 2 tbs of fat and the eggs will not look or feel greasy.

Also if you're adding some chopped onion and pepper or other veg to your eggs then you can use even more fat to braise the veg and it'll get incorporated in your veg and eggs. My favorite veg are asparagus, or spinach, or mushrooms, or onion and pepper mix. but I also like chopped broccoli on occasion.

All of these veg add fiber of course, as well as increasing your fat usage. Fat helps things keep moving, as does water. have some warm water in the morning with lemon in it for a basic folk remedy for constipation. make sure you're drinking throughout the day, and not just with meals.

Hope that Helps, Kitty

Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all they ways, acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths. Proverbs 3:5-6

Hi Maxine, and welcome.

Everyone, Is there a particular lo carb diet you are trying this time or just lo carb? I recently bought the book "The Perfect Diet" and it's lo carb, but you are allowed 400-600 calories from starches each day. ie: sweet potato 180 cals, 1 cup rice 205 cals. It's a paleo diet with some starches.
It sure is easier for me, even if I don't eat a starch every day. Also it recommends mini fasting, like from 8pm to noon (women can go to 10am) each day to burn off your glycogen stores. You can have coffee or vegetables during the fast, just no starch, protein or fasts. I have a raw green juice in the am.

The diet should be 65% plant foods, 35% animal foods, no grains except white rice.
I am losing on this, and feel more satisfied. Will see how it goes.

Hi all! I'm Maxine and I am also a professional dieter! emoticon
But I am retiring from dieting and now taking up life style change as a new profession!

I have been lo-carbing for almost 3 weeks (switched from Weight Watchers that was so not working for me!) and as of this morning, have dropped almost 11 lbs. This is not my first time trying low carbs, but this time it seems to be clicking and I have realized this is what works for me. I love the fact that I am not starving but still losing weight!

Glad to have found this group! BTW, I am 55 yrs young.

Quitting is NOT an option!

I'm way way way passed 50 so I think I belong on this group. I have been pigging out after supper and feel that if I do low carb I won't be craving food so bad. I've lost a few pounds and then gained 5# back in just the last 2 weeks. I want to get down to a healthy BMI which would be 145#.

Sharon you inspire me with your walking. I am feeling pretty good right now. I have done two short bursts of gardening today which is not something I manage to do. I have stopped taking the pills and I just feel so much better. He has tried me on 4 lots now. The first lot were awful, the second lot were great which the govt have now stopped funding, and when that happens they stop making them. And both types he has had me on since have made me feel so ill in so many ways. I persevered for the last six weeks and now Im giving them up again till I see him in another six weeks. I dont want to feel ill all the time. Im nearly 73 and want to enjoy the rest of my life as much as possible. Feeling so good today.
I am thinking of maybe trying a little walking. While I am off these meds I think I will perhaps feel strong enough to do it. I have also started an alpha mind training thing. Dont know what will happen, but who knows perhaps I will find myself fit and jumping over fences by the end of it. Nothing to lose and it will be great if it is not a scam. If it is - well it will have been worth it just to try - so no harm done. :o)

Keep up the good work. Yes, I know what you mean about the 100carb come to think of it. Because when I do low cal, even though I am 1000 a day, the carbs soar up with just plain ole veges. :o)

Sorry if Ive told you all this before ladies, I tend to forget what I post. Perhaps the Alpha Mind Waves will work with that too. emoticon

Big hugs my friends in healthy eating.

It sure is, and when you yoyo it not only gets and stays bigger it just sorta hangs there after you start losing. Dr. said only way to lose it is "the knife" well, i don't have the money or the courage for that emoticon So me and my belly have become somewhat used to each other. I'm heading for 70 in 2 yrs so i'm going to enjoy what i have left and not fuss to much over 15 lbs. I will endeavor to lose it though with all that's in me, hoping walking will save me this summer, if my knees and hips don't give up on me first.

I know Wispy, 100 carbs a day is easy. according to a low carb guru that is the sweet spot. I will say that I juice every morning and its mostly greens with a little lemon, so not sure if that makes a difference or not, but its still carbs. It is the belly fat that always gives us the most trouble. LOL I had seen a book called "Grain Belly" , didn't read it, but it made me think that is my problem. The thing that cracks me up is, I weigh actually less than I did 12 yrs ago, but my waist is bigger. Darn hard to get rid of belly. LOL

Hi everyone, I too lost weight on WW years ago, but sadly gained a good portion back. I managed to keep off all but 10 lbs and yo yoed that back and forth for years. Because of inflammation issues and the fact that my sister has ceilac's, I decided to give up wheat and oats, and within a couple months I have reached the goal weight I was unable to get to before, even with WW.
I keep my carbs around 100 per day and that seems to work for me.

Hi there Mary, so happy you have joined us. I cannot touch grains at all, but wheat is the worst by far. I have been on low carb for three years now, and love this way of life. No craving as long as I stay about from all those refined anything products, in my case even whole grains do not suit me. The beauty of low carb for me is that there are substitues which can replace the high carb goodies which are protein based. this is the first time I can really see myself not going back to yo yoing. I too lost a lot at WW many years ago and became a free lifetime member. the problem was the carb problem had not been addressed and as soon as I went bck to eating "normally" it all crept back on.

Look forward to seeing you on the threads. By the by I cannot comment on South Beach as I do not use that programme. I started on one for my health problems, it is just basic low carb. And I use the atkins recipes, and others I make up myself as I go along.

Hug Wispy.

Hi everyone I'm Mary! I've been a member of SparkPeople for a while but not very active on it. My doctor recommended me to do South Beach. I tried it but just could not do it. Most likely because I did not want to give up carbs! Anyway I went on WW and lost 20 lbs! I now realize it is because I had eliminated carbs from my diet! DUH! Anyway WW is just to expensive so I have decided to give South Beach another try. I got a flier in the mail for Wheat Belly and will be purchasing that. For some reason I'm thinking that the two could be the same....any one out there think the same?

I really need to break the carb habit...that really is my down fall.

Looking forward to getting to know all of you.

good golly Sharon, I did answer this yesterday, either there was a glitch or it was on a different thread.

Sorry Im no help at all. I never count my fibre. As long as I forgive me (poop) Ok I never think of it. As I cant eat grains at all I get almost all my fibre from veges. However pumpkin and figs work wonders for me when necessary. Prunes are also good if you like them.xxxx

Hi nevergiveup, it has worked wonders for so many of my ailments including IBS. I think we all seem to be different in our daily carb count.

Atkins outline a plan for starting, and then for maintaining which I guess is a good rule of thumb.

Personally I can only eat 20 carbs a day maximum to maintain and I go on a lowcar/low cal (100 a day) in order to lose. But we are all different. I cannot exercise and that, combined with my age and metabolism, is why my intake needs to be so low.

Atkins suggest starting induction on 20 a day. You can always see how you go, and if you are losing too fast, then you can adjust it to what suits you.

good luck.

Hi what should the carb tracker be set at? I have IBS and noticed the low carb, high fat seems to be helping my tummy a lot.....I just want to make sure I set it right to stay within range.

Also, thanks for the welcome!

Hey Gail thats what I did when I was on the Heller Programme. It worked pretty well for me as long as I was active. Once I became disabled with no exercise I had to find something that worked better for me. But it was a good plan. The eating carbs within the one hour sure did stop the craving. It amazed me. If I was going out for lunch I had my main meal then instead of at night. It didnt seem to make any difference to the weight loss.

I got through days 1 and 2 with eating mainly protein and a few vegetables during the day and having carbs only at dinner. So far I have been able to stop from my mid afternoon eating. I will try to keep this up through the holidays although I may have to switch it around Friday since they are having a buffet luncheon at the nursing home where my mother is living.

Welcom Karegiver. You might enjoy Dr. Bernstein's book. He's a diabetic, and has done really well on a low carb diet. His plan is super strict, but worth taking a look at if you want to actively manage your condition.

Hi there Kargiver, good to have you aboard.

Low carb is a great way to go for many of us. I keep diabetes at bay by following a low carb plan as I dont want to take the medication. There are many to choose from which vary a bit.

Atkins, Protein Power and South Beach seem to be among the most popular.

I personally stay away from all processed carbs and sugar. My eating plan combines a few week on low carb with no calorie restriction and then a few weeks lo cal/low carb combined. Low carb weeks any kind of protein and low carb vegetables.
when I combine it with low cal. I reduce the fat and up the veges.
I find this works well for me as I am unable to exercise.

Wishing you well.

Wispy

I am new and on the verge of becoming a diabetic. I see my doctor in 2 months and needs to loose 15 lbs before then to have a good report. Otherwise - I may be starting diabetic treatment. Being a nurse, I don't want to cross that bridge. Any diet plan help would be appreciated. I do great until after work usually. Lost 18 lbs and now up and down the same 3 or 4. Not good cuz i need to drop at least 40. HELP !!!

Hey Jude, oh that made me smile and reminded me of the sixties and my younger days.

I'm 73 now.

So happy you have joined us, it is good to be able to eat so well, not feel hungry and still lose weight.

Hugs Wispy.

I'm happy to join this group. Just starting back AGAIN. It seems to be getting harder and harder. Today I stepped on the scale after a long absence and was not happy. However If I just focus on the scale I can make myself nuts. So,I will focus on tracking and exercise. I know I need the support. So thank-you all in advance. Have a great day.

Hey there and welcome to the Team. Lo carb is a great way of life. I too follow it for heart, cholestrol, blood pressure diabetes and several other health issues.

The net carbs are those numbers with the amount of fibre deducted,

On the spark food checking page when you put in your daily carb intake it gives you the net carb number as well as the carb one. Some of us go with the nett carb number in our daily carb quota.

I dont because I find it very difficult to lose weight and so stick to the old basic carb count.

Its worth a try though. I am in my seventies and mostly housebound so exercise does not happen and I guess I burn very few carbs in day, but the good news is there is no hunger and no craving. Love this way of life.

Ask anything you want to know we are all friendly and helpful on this team.

Hugs Wispy.

Same here Betty. It was no problem to lose it - however it was always a yoyo cos I sure loved those carbs.
