The water is starting to warm again and I am anxious to get back to the beach and into the pool. My husband isn't really fond of the beach but no matters I shall venture out alone!

I bought a new swimsuit yesterday, it's been awhile since I wore one. I'm afraid of looking like a whale.

I hope it went well!

You know yesterday I discovered my cat had chewed a hole through my sport swim suit? So I couldn't so swimming yesterday morning and now I need to go buy a new one today or I can't do my swim training. She's more dog than cat I swear.

Call me Sandy.

I know it's an old thread but since swim suit season is here or retuning for us in the Northern Hemisphere here is a fitting quote.

Just pick out a swim suit you think is pretty and looks great on you. Head out to the pool or beach with your love ones and if you don't feel confidant, fake it until you become it and enjoy the water :).

Even when I was 105 lbs, I felt awkward in a swimsuit. It's not just you. Just put it on and get out there!

I just got back from a Vegas vacation (buffets + gigantic daiquiris = bad for SparkDiets!), that I bought a new swim suit for, so I could lounge by the pool. It's an awesome bathing suit, and I'm very smug that I was able to find it after only 15 minutes of searching the racks in the store. Hah! :-)

Here's the thing: Swimsuits are like any other form of clothing. You pick one that draws attention to your best traits, and away from your bad ones. For me, that means a tankini, since that hides my belly while letting me show of the parts of me that I know look good (shoulders, legs, cleavage). It's not that I'm ashamed of my belly. I just don't see why I should hang it out there and let it grab all the attention that my shoulders and legs have worked so hard at the gym to earn.

itsaclaire is right. Everyone has a distorted perception of their own body, women a lot more than men, since we've been brainwashed from such an early age that we have to be skinny and pretty, because our value as people depends on it. I will spare you my reflexive rant on what a huge load of total bulls*** that is for now, I'll just add what I've already said in this thread: Your opinion about yourself is in the end the only one that matters. Changing it from negative to positive is very difficult, but once it's been done, it's amazing how easily everyone around you will start to agree with you that you are indeed beautiful. Because you're right, you are, and there's nothing anyone can say or do to change that.

All hail bathing suit season! emoticon

Go girl! You are much braver than me - I am hiding my belly under a tankini. But I think we both probably suffer from a distorted perception of our own bodies and don't see ourselves the way that others see us. I am sure that you are not as "big" as you think you are, and I'm not as "big" as I think I am either.

I will definitely be *trying* to walk with confidence in my bathing suit next weekend. I will report back and tell you all how it goes!

Graywarden, your most recent reply was fantastic. It really made me grin. I, too, will be wearing a bathing suit this Memorial Day, and I also am the largest of the group. My fiance and his family are all skinny. Not a female in that family is overweight. I'm a girl with big hips, big thighs, and a tummy + love handles that could do with losing a few inches. Add to the list that I do not own a one piece. I own a two-piece, thick-strapped halter bikini. I can see myself cringing at my reflection already. But Graywarden, I think when I stand in front of that mirror I'll remember what you said and strike a pose that accents every single curve that my momma gave me!

Thanks Gray. I will definitely try to keep that in mind over that weekend. And I think what you said is exactly what I'd say to someone else. It's so hard to apply those kinds of things to ourselves, right? Sometimes it makes me feel like a hypocrite. But I have a hard time being accepting and forgiving and gentle with myself, the way I am with others.

I decided to read your post from a different point of view. What you just said is that unlike the flat-chested and bony girls around there, you have real curves. The kind that skinny girls pay a fortune for. So tie a big scarf as a skirt around your hips, make sure the bikini top has supportive cups and under-wires, stand up tall, and sashay past the bony flat-chested ones to the tune of teeth grating in bitter envy...

Maybe easier said than done, but definitely worth a try, no?

EDIT:
And +1 on what CrimsonFyre said: Your boyfriend obviously thinks you're hotter than the skinny ones are. And when all is said and done, your opinion and his opinion are the only ones that matter. Just do your best to keep that in mind. Nothing is as sexy as self-confidence.

a size 10 is a beautiful size! My goal size to be comfy in a swimsuit is a 12 :)
Who cares if they are a size 2-4, think of it this way, you probably have beautiful womanly curves (hips, etc) and can fill out a bathing suit better than they can. Look in the mirror and realize how gorgeous you are, your boyfriend is with you, not them, he thinks you are beautiful even if you don't think you are.
One thing I've learned in this journey, I'm harder on myself than anyone else is. My financee thinks I'm gorgeous even at the size 16 I am at (he is half that size), and it's me and only me who self-hates. Remind yourself of your beauty and strut your stuff, show the confidence that you have hidden inside! :)

Ladies,

In about a month and a half, I will be going with my boyfriend to hang out with his friends and their girlfriends over Memorial Day weekend. All of his friends' girlfriends are tiny miniature people and are probably size 2-4, tops. Even though I'm only a size 10, they make me feel ginormous. I am so stressed about wearing a bathing suit in front of every body without any curvy ladies by my side. Any thoughts about making it through the weekend with my self-esteem in tact?

xo
