Historical Fiction:
FOOTPRINTS ON THE HORIZON (5), by Stephanie Grace Whitson. How WWII affected the everyday life of people, prisoners of war, those who used prisoner of war labor, the returning wounded. Three women wait for the conflict in Europe to end, but they discover victories won in life close to home.
WATCHERS ON THE HILL (3) by Stephanie Grace Whitson. Second in the series.

WHISPERS ALONG THE RAILS (2) & AN UNCERTAIN DREAM (2), by Judith Miller. Concluding books of the Postcards from Pullman series. Not as good IN THE COMPANY OF SECRETS, but ok for historical romantic fiction.

SURVIVING HITLER (5) by Andrea Warren. Book for upper elementary students and older. I quote from a review: “What was the secret to surviving the death camps? How did you keep from dying of heartbreak in a place of broken hearts and broken bodies? ‘Think of it as a game, Jack,’ an older prisoner tells him. ‘Play the game right and you might outlast the Nazis.’ Caught up in Hitler's Final Solution to annihilate Europe's Jews, fifteen-year-old Jack is torn from his family and thrown into the nightmarish world of the concentration camps.“ It is a sobering book, especially as one thinks that things like this could happen again – especially to Christians.

Fiction
THE AMBER PHOTOGRAPH (4) by Penelope J. Stokes. A very good book but because I don’t want to give it away, I “quote” from the book jacket. ‘Diedre’s mother is dying’ and ‘gives her daughter an old photograph and these parting words, “Find yourself. Find your truth. Just don’t expect it to be what you thought…” and Diedre’s search begins…It will shake up her world…’

God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference!

I think at some point, I will go back and list all the books I have read in the last few months - get it all in one place. Then I might have more than a couple to show for myself. Ha ha.

Sharon, that's fine! Just so long as we have the title and author and genre, if you don't care to share what you thought of it that's okay. It helps me to know whether to put it on my wish list or not. Knowing people's tastes also helps me to know whether or not I would like one that they liked or not.

God bless, Kim

I just realized I spelled his last names wrong it is Myers. I have reserved all of his books that the library has including the trilogy, Fire of Heaven.

I have only read one book this month (that is really bad for me), but it was extremely interesting and a page turner. In fact, I had to make myself put it down, so that I could go to sleep. So what is this book?

The Voice by Bill Meyers.

There is a book club that meets once a month at my church and that is what they are reading for the month of May and that is why I read it. I would highly recommend Bill Meyers books, in fact, I have to check and see if the library has any more.

Snapdragon, welcome to our team! I was going to leave you a message on your SparkPage, but it was set to private.

There's so many sub-genres in the Christian market that I'm never at a loss for something that interests me, although I do read cozy/traditional mysteries that are decent. I appreciated your thoughts on Crying Wind and looked it up on Amazon. I don't know if I'll ever get to it, but I'm adding it to my list.

We're glad you're here and look forward to all you have to share.

Welcome to the team, SNAPDRAGON85.

This is a great team with lots of great discussion - regarding what we are reading, eating, devotions and prayer requests. You might want to chech out some of our other threads, especially the What You Are Reading one. That is where we discuss our book choices and what we thing about them. The one you just shared sounds like an awesome read. I would very much like to read it.

I will look forward to seeing more of you on our threads and getting to know you.

Hi. I just joined Sparkpeople yesterday and this was the first team I joined. I LOVE to read, and has only been within the last year that I have turned to Christian books.
I wanted to just share that I read "CRYING WIND" by Crying Wind herself. It is about her journey to becoming a Christian while trying to shake her own upbringing as a Cherokee indian and the GREAT SPIRIT culture of her tribe. She includes charcoal drawings that she made herself. A WONDERFUL BOOK that shows that ALL PEOPLE have some of the same issues and questions. I HIGHLY recommend this book! emoticon

.... "While out of my body I saw God and Hell"; by Roger Mills. I thought it would be interesting but I am finding it more depessing than anything else. I guess if you're into that it's a good read. **

.... "The Still of the night"; by Kristen Heitmann. A Christian love story about two people who made a mistake in their youth and how it affected their lives and choices afterwards. I am enjoying it. *****

.... "Walking with God"; by John Eldredge. It's sort of a devotional. Just reading one small section at a time. I always liked his insight. *****

FOR LOVE AND GRACE a novel by Kendra Norman-Bellamy. An interesting read by a Christian African American author. Two men discover the true meaning of brotherhood as their lifelong friendship is put to an awesome test. Ends with a spectacular dream wedding.
CROSSING JHORDAN’S RIVER by Kendra Norman–Bellamy. A well-written tale of how a man deeply hurt by important women in his life (his mother’s suicide and first wife’s leaving of him) overcomes through God. The problem I had with the book was I do not believe in remarriage while one’s original marriage partner is alive.
REDEMPTION, REMEMBER, RETURN, REJOICE, REUNION, FAME, FORGIVEN, FOUND, FAMILY, by Karen Kingsbury.
WILD HEATHER by Catherine Palmer. Historical setting in England involving two neighboring families fueding. It is resolved in a way that is forbidden by both families. The one problem in it is the way they solved division in their church over creation vs. evolution in the church by tolerating evolutionary ideas.
THREAD OF DECEIT – Catherine Palmer. A sad story of a child predator, but one in which faith in God overcomes the evil.
THE SEAT BESIDE ME – Nancy Moser. A fictional account of 5 plane crash survivors and the people who were in the seats beside them. Usually there’s small talk between such people, but in this account there is a life-changing bond. Very thought-provoking and emotional to read.

I haven't looked at my list yet, but I know I don't have many either. You're right, Sue . . . the ones of us who post regularly really do become close. We're in this together, plus the bond we share in Christ brings us even closer.

I struggle with time also. Often it's like - do I post or do I read?!

Wow,Carol, I'm glad I'm not the only one who only has two books to post.

I was thinking of listing all the books I've read since fall. I actually read quite a few before I started with Spark in mid-January. Now that extra time is spent reading articles, tracking food, exercising and posting!!! Doesn't sound like much, does it? But I have enjoyed getting to know everyone here. You are all like friends.

My March 2009 book list all by Dee Hendersen:
The Negotiator
The Guardian
The Truth Seeker
The Protector
The Healer
The Rescuer (now reading)

I now have another of her series called "True" and those aren't hard cover - just large soft cover - easier for me to handle.

I am on the last book in the Dee Hendersen series of the O'Malley Family Chronicles "The Rescuer". I then have her entire "True" series that I was able to pick up on line from the tips that Kim put out. I got the whole set for $15.00 and they look like brand new. I didn't even pay shipping. That should give me plenty to do for the month. We had our cable TV disconnected to save expenses and I don't miss it at all. Soon it will be warm enough to sit out on the deck on my swing with my ice water, my cat, and my books. Now THIS is the life.

I just got one read this last month.

Feb. book list:

"Messy Spirituality" by Mike Yacconelli. Christian living/spirituality. **** Very good. Focuses on God's grace and how it is OK to be a "messy" Christian who doesn't have it all together and isn't perfect, even though that seems to be the general perception in churches today -- that everybody is all put together. Encourages us as Christians to be honest and transparent with each other about our faults and struggles. Thought provoking.

Thanks, Carol!

Smileygrl, I think I read 7 of the 9 or 10. I didn't like the last one that I read because the pastor said that there was no such thing as hell; I knew the guy was weak in his theology from other books, but that just did me in. I haven't seen that one at my library either. You might check on Amazon and read what it is about and decide then if it is worth it. You can probably find a fairly decent copy for a lot less than a new copy.

Feb reading,

"Just Beyond the Clouds", Karen Kingsbury. It doesn't belonng w/ any of her series as far as I could tell. I've read just about all her series.

Started reading at the end of the month "A Christmas Star", Thomas Kinkade/ Katherine Spencer

It's in the Cape Light Series. I had no idea there was a book 9 or 10. This is book 10 and I can't find book 9 in any libraries in my state. If any have read "The Christmas Cottage" please let me know if it's worth purchasing seeing I've read all the other's in that series. TY

February List (only two with having been sick):

Max Lucado's Cast of Characters--I have always loved Max's books. He is always very insightful and in this book, he helps us understand how and why each individual's characteristics are important to God.

Debbie Macomber's Coming Morning Softly--my mother turned me on to Debbie's books. They are contemporary romances, but don't have all of the sex that you see in romance novels. I highly recommend her books, especially the Cedar Cove Series, which starts with 102 Rosewood.

Cheryl

For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-- Ephesians 2:8 NIV
For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Jeremiah 29:11 NIV

ONE TUESDAY MORNING by Karen Kingsbury. A fictional account of people who went through the destruction of the Twin Towers on 9-11. Could be true and points to the good that could (and did) come out of this terrible event.

BEYOND TUESDAY MORNING - by Karen Kingbury. A continuation of the fictional lives of the people written about in ONE TUESDAY MORNING.

HIGHLAND HOPES by Gary E. Parker - A fascinating story with fascinating twists and turns. –ComputerAddict1. Solomon Porter, strong & stubborn mountain man, must come to terms with a devastating loss, one that has left his only daughter, Abby, to grow up feeling isolated and out of place. First episode of the BLUE RIDGE LEGACY series, in which Abigail Faith Porter, and unpretentious 100-year-old matriarch, recounts the astounding events of her life…(in which) the struggles and triumphs of “growing up in the hollers of the Blue Ridge Mountains” spring to life. The story is fiction, but “it is based in the reality of a group of people who were my ancestors” says Gary. E. Parker in the Acknowledgements of the book.

HIGHLAND MERCIES By Gary E. Parker – A great read! A continuation of the fictional lives of the people written about in ONE TUESDAY MORNING.

Anita and Gran, welcome!!! Most of those books by Karen Kingsbury I have listened too. I did read the 9/11 series (well the first two books) and enjoyed it very much. I am listening to Ever After by her right now. We've mentioned this before, but your library may be a part of Overdrive.com or NetLibrary.com, where you can check out books to listen to for free. You can listen from your computer or download them to an MP3 player.

God bless, Kim

There is nothing more important in your life than your relationship with Christ.
