My name is Amanda and I just joined the challenge today. I'm actually 6 months pregnant, but I had a doctor's appointment today and he is concerned about my weight gain. He told me I needed to watch how much sugar I ate. Which I do eat a lot of. So I joined this challenge to help me be more aware of what I'm eating and to help with the cravings. I know if I start now once I have the baby it will be easier to go back to the lifestyle I had before I was pregnant. So my main goal this week is to keep track of everything I put in my mouth; sweets or non-sweets and to monitor why I'm eating. Is it because I'm hungry? Or is it because I'm bored?

Good luck to everyone! We can do this!

"Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart."

Hi, my name is Anne and I just joined today. I joined the challenge to journal my foods 3 times a week. For the last 3 months I have been craving and satisfying the sugar fix constantly. And the worst part is it's at night, every night. I have never had this problem to this extreme and so far can't even start to slow it down. Dozen choc. chip cookies, 10 eaten in one night. 6 pack sundae ice cream drumsticks, 5 gone in one night. Butter Cinnamon Struesel Slices, 1 pound, half gone in one sitting, Hershey's bag of Dark Chocolate - gone in 3 days. And the list goes on and on.
So I'm going to try my hardest to get started on this challenge. Good Luck to all of us.

What you call INSANITY, I call INSPIRATION!!!

COOLMAMA11 - It is really hard to get away from that sugar !
I guess that not all of it is bad...
In Canada, they are now saying that chocolate milk is better for
you, than fruit juice. I think I read somewhere here, that chocolate
milk is good to have, after a workout !
Life is sure getting complicated, now that we know so much..!

I mentioned so much about chocolate milk, because I just had a tall
glass of 1% partially-skimmed chocolate milk, with my grilled basil
chicken steamer bowl, for Lunch ! I'll now peel a fresh orange, for
dessert !

i am becoming more aware of when my cravings occur. i havent conquered them all yet but if i could do that, i wouldn't need this challenge.

i am an emotional eater. i love candy bars. my husband says there is no hope for me, but i beg to differ. i am working on this and i will conquer it.

i am getting more involved with spark people challenges and articles and blogs. that is gonna help me. i also am thinking of joining anytime fitness so i can go when i get off work at 10:30pm
that is the worst time for me. i get home and love to sit down with a bowl of ice cream or a candy bar and relax. i have to figure out a new routine.

Since I started in the middle of the week my week one will last a week and a few days. Basically I am going to move on to week 2 after next week on Saturday. Well lets see, here are my goals for this week.

1. I joined the team challenge to journal three times a week, so that one of my goals.

2. Another goal is to not eat any sweets until Easter. On that day I will allow myself to eat some cheese cake my husband will be making, and a limited anount of chocolate. After that day I will go back to my goals. Her will have to take the cheese cake to work though! He is used to doing things like that lol.

3. Create a schedule of weeks to manage my sweets, like week one no sweets, week two no sweets for two weeks, week three one day to eat a sweet. Then start over.

The last couple of days has really shown me what a mental game sugar cravings are! Because I'm trying to just have a sweet 3 times a week (I can't stop cold turkey, it just makes me power eat!) I'm noticing how sweet fruit tastes again! Had a thought this morning while making my oatmeal that oatmeal raisin cookies would be good. Had a couple peices of dried apricot in my oatmeal instead & don't want the cookies anymore. Progress! :) Keep up the good work everybody!

Day 4 here I come. Last night I had bulgar wheat, broccoli, and a sweet potato for dinner. Did I mention I'm working on a vegan transition while participating in this challenge? Eeks! Anyway, dinner was wonderful. I was super full and had no cravings for sweets at all (thank you good carbs). I even came in under my calorie range for the first time in months.

This morning I had strawberries and banana on a whole wheat pita for breakfast and a cup of coffee with an ounce of light vanilla soymilk in it. I'm feeling today is going to be good. I'd rather have natural healthy sugars than junk sugars or sweeteners.

Hi, all! Officially started this challenge today. The sugar assessment nailed me - there are definitely situations in which I am prone to wander down the sugar path. My goals for this challenge are to reduce my social sugar eating and to hopefully reduce my sugar cravings.

My Challenge Goal is to get more mindful about saying " no " to sweet treats.
I find that my resistance is really challenged, if the sweet treats are right there,
in my freezer ! That is why it is so important, not to even have these temptations
in the residence !
Another Goal : Say " yes " to healthy snacks, such as nuts, fruits, and vegetables !

Was helping at a "meet and great" last night and needed a snack. There was lots of veggies there, along with cookies and mints. I went for the veggies--of coarse. But then noticed I was eating cookies. OMG Didn't even realize it--Boy that's bad. I did find out it was a "breakfast" cookie made w/ banana's, applesauce, nuts and oats. Made me feel a little better. emoticon

Wow, I just read that sugar can increase stress and anxiety. I have never heard this before, but it makes sense. I was thinking about how I feel after a sugar crash...moody, irritable. I guess anything that causes blood sugar fluctuation could cause stress. Thoughts?

Way to go, COOLMAMA!

This morning I rediscovered the breakfast that helped me initially lose my weight: Oatmeal. I've been avoiding it because I thought it would take too long and I have been running late since time change. It actually took less time to prepare than cold cereal, because I cooked it in the microwave while I was preparing my son's lunch. I also remembered that a dash of cinnamon makes a nice, sweet topper. Unfortunately, I also added some chocolate soymilk that I bought thinking my son would like. He doesn't. Half a cup had 12 grams of sugar! I really should just dump it, so it doesn't tempt me anymore. Anyway, I also had a cup of it last night (24 grams of sugar). Haven't had any other sweets though, so that is good. My goal today is no "out-right" sweets. But I do plan on having a sweet potato with dinner.

JP,

Thank you so much for the great compliments. Now that I have been in maintenance for awhile, I find it harder and harder to stick with it...especially if I don't track my food. It's like a license to cheat! Also, that "newly met goal" feeling has worn off and I really need something new to work toward to keep me going. I am hoping that finishing my degree (in 6 weeks emoticon ) will cause me to boost my physical activity more instead of making me lazy.

I'm glad that you are back at it, and you are doing a fantastic job. Those who are successful are those who refuse to give up. emoticon

Yes! Jules, moving sure does help. I like taking long walks and working out. I also notice that I crave when I am feeling a bit insecure in a social situation. Fear again, eh? Keep me away from the buffet table! I still have not figured out a way to not binge there, except for eating before I go and refusing to look at the food. That helps as long as I can maintain it. Aargh! Still working on that.

Congratulations on meeting your goal. It must give you a tremendous amount of satIsfaction and pride to have accomplished more than your best hopes and sooner than you ever thought. I was very close to my goal when I first did Spark People in 2007. Then I tore my ACL, had surgery, and gradually regained almost all the weight I had lost. I am back at it again. I find it harder to be compliant this time.

emoticon I am a sugar addict. I love love love sugar! I have been cutting back recently, but I will indulge in the delectable treat known as chocolate. I keep it to the side so that I know I have it if I want to have some. I just have to limit myself :o) I must say, I've gotten better at controlling it though!!

JP,
Amazing insights! I also have cravings when I'm "afraid of getting started, for fear failure." Maybe it's stress hormones or something...I'm glad that you have found things that are working for you. Moving works for me. If I'm on the go, I'm fine. It is when I stop that I crave.

Week 1 - I did well. I am so grateful to have not had any sweets other than fruit and stevia in my plain Greek yogurt. Today I had a handful of little square cheese crackers. I bet they have sugar in them, come to think of it. Other than that I avoided it. A month ago I was in the throes of a binge I couldn't stop. Now that I have avoided sweets for a little while it is getting easier. I had help - from my acupuncturist, who taped magnets in my ears, from Women to Women who sold me a whey shake they say is for sugar cravings. And from my body buddy, who is very encouraging. I notice that when I am afraid of being creative - afraid of getting started, for fear of failure, I think, that is when I crave the worst. Usually in the afternoon. I am grateful for this team, as well. Thanks, everyone.

COOLMAMA,
Great suggestion! I prefer natural sweetners and often put figs in my oatmeal. I have been known to use light vanilla soymilk and some banana sometimes too. It has a little sugar but the soymilk adds a little protein too.

Today I am restarting the challenge, as I have completely fallen off the wagon. I have been sick and so has my son, and being stuck in the house all day multiple days without exercise has reaked havoc on my weight, sugar consumption habits, and eating habits in general. My goal this week is to get back on track, get sweets out of the house, and track my food again. I'm also headed back to the gym today. I do so much better with food when I'm on a regular exercise schedule!

Oatmeal is a good breakfast for me but I need a substitute for the brown sugar. I need something that will add to it or else it is bland. I put a few dried cranberries and sliced almonds in it already but that alone is not going to work. Is the Splenda blend OK?

Hi I'm Elaine, I just joined today, sweets are my nemesis, I ~can't~ Resist them at all, find myself struggling so hard, the only way I can try to get this addiction under control, is by not having any sweets in the house (I always lose the argument if they are here)I allow myself a sweet treat once a week, so far this is working, I wish I wasn't like this, and had more control, but alas I do not! I will do everything I can to try and control this demon that stalks inside me lol! emoticon

I hope this challenge will teach me skills for coping!

Hi, my name is Carrie and I just joined this team today! Lately I have been craving and eating sweets more then usual. I have been eating quite a bit of sweets this week. I noticed that I eat sugary foods when I am stressed or bored. At the end of these four weeks I hope to accomplish limiting my sweets intake and substitute them with healthy snacks.

Carrie

Well the last day of my first week is here and boy have my eyes been opened to what I have been doing. It is no wonder I have gained weight. I have lost my sense of portion control where sweets are concerned. Oh I will have the right portion...and then I will have another right portion...and then maybe yet another one. If I try and resist the sweets, my mind will just race through everything else I have in the kitchen. I have found I might as well get the sweets before I eat a bunch of other stuff and then still get the sweets on top of that.
Nighttime is the worst for me. During the day when I am around people at work, I can do really well, but at night when I am home alone...Katy bar the door.
I will swear to myself that I am not going to bring any more sweets into the house, but the next day or two, they appear after a trip to the store. It is like I have an alter ego that buys this stuff just to tempt me.
I have found some of the Vita Muffin Tops which are a good replacement food because they at least have some good stuff to go along with the bad. I have not bought any peanut butter, but there is some Nutella in the cabinet still. My alter ego did buy some Keebler Mint Chocolate cookies the other night, but I am trying desperately to just eat the 4 that are a serving. I have tried to just get one out at a time. That way it is like I am getting 4 helpings.
I will do better next week because I am going back home. I will be around my family. I do so much better when I am with them. I think that is most of my problem here...loneliness...and boredom.

If we have sweet snacks, I will eat one instead of eating a meal. Not so much because it's sweet, but more because it is ready to eat.

Day 7 of week 1 was my best day, only fresh fruits and vegetables. Not only did that cut out sugar for the day, but salt too. I never felt deprived, nor got hunger pangs. Its amazing what the body can adjust to when I don't obsess about food and keep myself busy!! The whole week was a challenge--with syrup on waffles, to chocolate chip cookies at work, to that one piece of carrot cake Friday night, but most days fruit or cheese/crackers helped curb the need for chocolate or sugary treats.
I am psyched for week 2!!

Day 7 was not my most successful day of Week 1: I went to a friend's for lunch and she made Meyer lemon squares but I only had one. We watched curling for 3 hours and I had 2 low carb beers - salad for lunch and 2 homemade bisuits (they were small). Ooomph! I was full afterwards. Anyway I drove home via town, parked the car and got out and walked for half an hour. That felt better. Then for dinner I had a green salad, small Greek salad and decaf tea. So I kept my calories under control. I had a couple tbsp of sorbet and blueberries as a dessert. All in all, I feel I made good progress this week cutting down on sweets. Especially in the evening I have noticed an absence of cravings. Onto Week 2!!

SILVERSONG and TAGILBERT21, I'm right there with both of you. It seems like I do fine during the day, but then after 6pm, BOOM. I want something sweet. This 1st week, I went ahead and cut out a lot of my sugar. I cut my coffee intake from 12 cups to 6 cups, using Splenda instead of sugar and I tried very hard not to eat any sweets (cookies, candy, chocolate, etc.). It all has to do with WILL POWER. I did find that if I needed something sweet, I ate 2 squares of dark chocolate, 70% Cocoa and that curved my sweet tooth. I didn't do this every day. But it worked. Also I started having a Slim Fast meal bar, for breakfast and lunch. They also helped with the sugar craving. Then I made a conscious effort to eat fruit or a vegetable for my snacks, then have my dinner. I lost 3.8lbs this week doing this and I have more WILL POWER than I have had. I don't expect my entire family to give up everything, including sweets. Although they only get the sweets in moderation. So I have everything in my house and it is hard when you walk in the kitchen and it is staring you right in the face. But like I said I was able to to turn and grab a piece of fruit instead. Now lets see how week 2 is going to go.

I have discovered some things about my out-of-control eating behaviors this week. Yes, sweets are a part of it, but not all sweets, and not all of the time. And other junk-type food comes in there as well. Anything with a strong taste or a lot of texture will call to me, for instance the crispy fried chicken I had a Lee's one night last week. I also realized that I do well on the weekend once I get my act together, and it carries over for two or three days into the week, but as stress and exhaustion become greater, that is when the cravings hit me, and when I tend to fall into the eating pit. It is also when I poop out on my exercise stuff. I just don't feel like I have the energy. I started a Couch to 5K program last week, and was doing well, but I haven't gone and tried to run since Monday, which would be understandable, since it rained most of the rest of the week, but I haven't gotten to the gym, either. Blech.

It is good to have an end to journey toward; but it is the journey that matters, in the end.

SILVERSONG I think I am right there with you.

When I get tired, bored or overwelmed I see to want to eat something sweet. I try to pick the best snack I can but does not always work that way.

New week so better decisions. Gotta lose some weight and make better choices soing it.

No more excuses, making all healthy choices.

I think that my triggers are occurring most often when I am tired and overwhelmed, which most often happens in the evenings, during that last rush to get everything accomplished before bedtime. I did okay with standing tough against them, allowing myself small treats here and there, but not too much. I think that tonight I may have stumbled upon a solution to two problems I have been having... #1 Sweet cravings to the extreme in the evenings, and #2 Not getting enough protein throughout my day. I went to the store earlier to try to protein bars to solve #2 and randomly discovered that they are sweet enough to fix my sugar cravings... Gonna try this out for the next few days and see how it goes. emoticon

Day 4 of wk 1. Must be having caffeine withdrawal . But I am hanging in there. We bought some great crackers to have with cheese. I did a lot around the house earlier.

Day 7 is not quite over and I have stayed with my 2 coffees with sugar but otherwise it has been a good day in regard to sweets, and, not quite so good a day in regard to other food. We did have pizza for lunch, although I was restrained by how much I ate, and I had a granola bar. Still I am glad to be completing week 1. emoticon

There's no junk at my place of work. Unless someone brings for everyone. I do crave junk when I am bored--- or at least I think i do. I think it is still something to do, really not hungry, just bored. emoticon

Challenge goals:

To cut back on the junk I eat and espically the soft drink I consume. I have gotten through days of headaches and severe cravings for my most favourite turn to item when I'm tired , a can of coke. I love coke, I would only have a can a day but it was enough to have me craving it and to get headaches if I didn't have it every day.

Why I eat the junk and drink the soft drink:

Boredom and a need for distraction at work lead me to eat junk during the afternoon, potato chips and chocolate bars are easily obtained as our work installed vending machines, I have resorted to leaving money at home so that I cannot get to the machine and I don't like asking people for money so I'm hoping this method will help me curve those afternoon snacks.
