The Liberal Republican Party of the United States was an American political party that was organized in May 1872 to oppose the reelection of President Ulysses S. Grant and his Radical Republican supporters in the presidential election of 1872. The party emerged in Missouri under the leadership of Senator Carl Schurz and soon attracted other opponents of Grant. The party opposed Grant's Reconstruction policies and sought civil service reform, but was unsuccessful in its efforts to deny Grant re-election and disappeared after the 1872 election.

The Republican Party had emerged as the dominant party in the aftermath of the Civil War, but many Republicans became dissatisfied with the leadership of President Grant. Prominent Republican leaders like Schurz, Charles Sumner and Lyman Trumbull had opposed slavery before and during the Civil War, but by 1872 believed that the United States should end Reconstruction and restore self-government to the Southern United States. Many Liberal Republicans also decried the scandals of the Grant administration and sought civil service reform.

The 1872 Liberal Republican convention nominated a ticket consisting of Horace Greeley, longtime publisher of the New-York Tribune; and Missouri Governor Benjamin Gratz Brown. Seeking to defeat Grant, the Democratic Party nominated the Liberal Republican ticket and endorsed the Liberal Republican platform. However, Grant emerged triumphant in the election, capitalizing on superior party organization and the disaffection many Democrats felt for Greeley. Greeley received 43.8% of the popular vote, winning the states of Texas, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia and Maryland. Grant received 286 of the 352 electoral college votes.

The Liberal Republican Party vanished immediately after the election, though a handful of its leaders continued to serve in Congress. Former party members joined both the Democratic and Republican parties and many later became members of the Greenback Party or the Mugwump movement. Historians[who?] suggest that by loosening the allegiance of liberal elements to the Republican Party, the Liberal Republicans made it possible for many of these leaders to move to the Democratic Party.

I like the idea of a challenges thread also.
Some Ideas topic structure.
For some Topics, Each team member would have posted a topic or replied to a topic in the Forum and during the next 7 to 28 days or so would go to www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/messageb
oa
rdsearch.asp?Recent=1
to find their topic in the Forum to go there and edit their post. After doing so for a set time they would copy as much of their accumulated post as desired and post it as a reply to my topic in the challenges "Post often in the 'Building Self-Esteem Self-Action Group' in the Spark People Challenges topic under the Message Boards of the Community tab www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/m
essageboa

&strViewThisPage=2
to put a copy of their edited posting for the set period there for all to see. They could continue to edit their post or create a new reply or topic in the Forum.
Other Topics would be such that the posts or replies would not be edited such as the "keep a word - change one," two word challenge. (dog house -- cat house -- house party -- [etc.])
Topics could be individually directed such as a journal or individual challenge or open to any Group Member.

I like the idea of a challenges forum. It could encompass any number of topics in the thread.

That's right, I forgot the message boards. So it's 'community' and then the ooption 'message boards' and then you will see 'Results' and below that there are the 'community journals'.

2015Today, I went to the "Community Tab" at the top of the Spark Page and did not find "Community Journals". Where and/or what are you referring to?
P.S. I think both of your ideas are worth considering.

Maybe call it the challenges forum? To post challenges?

Or 'team journals' where everyone can start their own personal thread to post about their progress and thoughts? (See the 'community journals' under 'community' - that's the kind of thing I mean).

I need Ideas for a new forum here. The only democratic way is to accept nominations, have a discussion, narrow our choices down to 3, then have a vote. Please give your input here and please don't start a new topic in this forum until after we have a vote in February.

I expect to have a vote that narrows the choices down to 3 the last week of January. And a final vote on the first 7 days of February.

Edit January 27th --- Only 2015TODAY made any suggestions, she is no longer a member of this team but others, including me, have liked her idea of a challenges Forum. Therefore, amended the team name accordingly. OLDEROWL
