I have severe back pain from arthritis when I walk and my feet cramp really badly too so for now about 20 minutes is the most I can do - and that hurts a lot! Hoping as I lose weight and gain core strength walking will become easier. Also biking every day.

I love walking. Hate running. Have tried it and decided the only good thing about running is stopping!

Can you try increasing the time you move in the hour, and 30seconds on each day? 5 minutes walking every hour should get you to your 5000 x

I used to be a dog walker and loved walking miles in the countryside, now I'm slowly recovering from feet and hip issues, if I walk for too long I struggle to walk the next day...but getting stronger. I can't wait until it's not something I have to plan, very grateful that my issues are temporary and will get better xx

I love to walk but wear braces on both legs and must use a walker. Drs. tell me no more than 2,000 steps a day and no more than 2 hrs on for the braces and to use a wheel chair the rest of the time. So not going to happen yet! And I can do more steps than 2,000 just making dinner or cleaning my small house! I honestly believe that if you don't use it you will lose it. So I try to keep myself going as long as I can.

walking, and I mean any kind of walking is such an easy way to have time to yourself to think about things. To me it is a form of meditation. I have planned so many virtual trips in my mind which in real life are out of the question.

Walking is sooooooo important that I spend time walking every day. If the weather is suitable I walk outside. There is a low, long hill in town with a good sidewalk (no places that are cracked that'd cause trip ups).

Do y'all count all the walking you do all day or just the walking with pedometer. I walk more than I sit.. constantly moving but I have no idea how many minutes or how fai I walk.

I am a newbie here. I used to walk 4 miles several days a week, but have moved and no longer have my walking buddies. It's going to be okay during the walk, I like being alone with my thoughts. The hard part is being a self starter and heading outside without encouragement. I am going to do this! Unfortunately I am starting small and can only make it about 10-15 minutes.

Have you tried some balance exercises? Look online. or get near a counter or chair to hold on to and stand on one foot, and see if you can let go for a second or so and progress little at a time.
Raise up and down on your feet to strengthen your ankles, it should help

The important thing is to START! whether it's walking in your house to the mail box or around the block. It's the beginning. You can't fail until you quit or give up. After having brain surgery and two back surgeries I started walking in my house a short distance then to the nearest fire hydrant, then the corner of the block, then around the block. Now I walk my dog as far as he wants to go and I love it! It's said if you want to lose weight get a dog and I think that's true.
If you don'[t have one, take a friend's dog for a walk. They'll both love you for it.
You can do it! If you don't like walking find something you like, biking, dancing whatever.

We have a gate not far from our house. It's about 10 min walk to there and back. So I decide just to get starting I will go to the gate and back every now and then.

I've done it 5 times today!

I started walking again a couple of weeks ago during my first break. It was only for 15 min, but it really made me feel like I did something. I am so out of shape that walking up this little hill took by breath away. Now I am walking on my treadmill in the morning at least for 20 min a day as well as walking on my 1st break and the hill doesn't seem as hard as it did 3 weeks ago. I try and walk at least 2 miles-3 miles a day now. I have been trying to get on the treadmill in evening after dinner for about another 30 min-40 min. It is really hard, but I have been trying to do it. Walking is one of the most easier exercises we can do. I love it. I just wish I had never stopped when I was up to 12 miles a day. I am trying to get back up there. Eventually I will and things will be good.

I've started walking to and from work every day. It's 2.5 miles, and the walk home is a gradual uphill climb with a steeper hill right at the end. It sucks while I'm doing it, but I feel so much better (and better about myself!) every time I hit the top of that last hill and know I've accomplished it again. Some days are easier than others for me.

I recently got a FitBit to help keep me motivated. When I notice I'm only a little bit away from that next bench mark I'm now more apt to get up and get out there and get it. The "competition" between some of my friends on there is also helpful, although I'm not a real competitive person. It keeps it fun, though. One of my coworkers also walks ALL the time, and her route to and from work is similar to mine, so it's nice to have someone there to chat with about it. We keep each other encouraged..

Yesterday, I went hiking with a friend.
2.14 miles -- should have been easy-peasy.
200 ft elevation changes.
Fitbit clocked 43 flights of stairs on this little 2.14 mile hike.
This was the Stairwell to Hell.
But I survived.

I am bone on bone... 47, and lost 130 lbs. I have another 65 to go to goal. I can move much better, but still have my limits. Standing/walking power for me is 5 hours a day and I am done. I can tell you if you do just 5 min a day of walk off the pounds, or something light, in place, and then increase it week by week, you will begin to feel better. The more I move, the better I feel. The less I move, the worse I feel. Wishing you many blessings :-)

Yesterday I recommitted to walking more and sitting in front of my computer less. I ended up walking for 61 minutes and dang proud for doing it. On another note... ate a take-out meal that was totally full of grease because I was too hungry to just say no. I told dh not to bring that home for me because of all the grease AND I will make sure never to get that hungry again... remembering that I can't "outwalk" my fork. Good luck everyone!

I do very little walking, I use a walker all the time and have bad arthritis in knees and joints. When I lose some weight I will try and do some source of exercise, right now it's out for me. Good Luck to you others on here. emoticon

Walking is my main form of exercise and I am really fortunate that my boyfriend likes to join me and I also have a dog that keeps me very motivated. All he has to do is stand by the door and give me that look that makes me feel so guilty....
I got an IWatch recently so I can track my fitness and it is also a great motivator! It shows me how many mile I've walked and how many calories I've burned. Jack and I often push ourselves to hit that three-mile mark. Fortunately, we live in a place where there are lots of beautiful places to hike and although the weather is changeable, we have a lot of really nice days.

I like to walk. I'm just starting my fitness routine and my plan is to walk 3 days (M, W, & F) and ride my bike 3 (T, TH, Sat.). Sunday will be my day off. Right now, I walk 3 miles. I always bring my IPod because the music really helps me push through and I find different paces of music help me vary my speed. I think of it as my own little form of intervals.

When the weather is good enough (walked when it was 46 out the other day), my trainer and I walk roughly 1.95 miles in 32 minutes during my lunch hour.. We have already discussed walking at least 1 day a week together when it is warmer out. My goal is to trim down that time (and add the extra block back in we were doing last summer). He is usually out on Fridays so i will walk it by myself then. The other 3 days we train, we do strength training. Cardio will help you lose weight, but you need to build muscle too.

When I walk alone, headphones. Music is refreshing to my soul. ;)

I love to walk, just not alone. My DH will come but he's about 10" taller than me and he doesn't like my speed. I get left in his dust then I really feel foolish.

I love to walk, but it is hard to get motivated to walk alone. I also don't like to walk in the freeze we have been having here. I got a treadmill and am setting a goal to use it every day. Then if I get to walk outside, it will be an added bonus.

I like walking. It is my favorite. In the summer I also like playing in the breakers at the beach. I love to body board.

Really like walking (hiking in better weather)
Just bought a 3DTriFit pedometer to count steps/calories burned. Cheaper than a fitbit. On sale at amazon. Well see how it goes.

I like walking, except I HATE walking in the cold winter weather. Sometimes I like to walk by myself so I can gather my thoughts & de-stress. Between my work & home life, I don't seem to have a stressfree place except in my car. Also, I feel like I'm always taking up the rear when walking with others - they're more fit than me. :(

I try to walk every day. My normal loop is about 2/3 of a mile.
