lol - yarn being a temptation is pretty funny!!

I bought a padded kneeler on the internet the other day - I want to deep clean my floors little by little and it will also be helpful weeding I think!!

My project - clean and organize. All of it. My house is big (3652 sq ft) so it will take awhile. But I can toss stuff that my dear (hoarder) husband would not toss so it's a great time to do it.

my "source " for yarn (and strangely enough Kathleen knows her!!!), Lis, sent me a teaser the other day...and i cant help it. i SWORE no more yarn till i had what i have at least half used. but...she had this GORGEOUS marino wool..in all different colors of the rainbow on one skein..and a pattern for a scarf, that i will have to give the item away as i never wear scarves, and ARGH!!! it was expensive, but i bought it. and i paid for the pattern, which turns out to be super simple. it was my only splurge since this whole quarantine started, i can not afford to do things like this, so i am calling it a "mental health moment" yarn is cheaper than a shrink, right???
she mailed it yesterday...it should be here tomorrow or friday. i'm so weak when it comes to yarn....

Speaking of Hawaii - I'm back! It'll take me awhile to catch up. But Holly - send me the pic of the bottle you have and I'll look for it the next time I'm in Hawaii!!

I had a wonderful time. Time goes by twice as fast in Hawaii as here in Texas...

NIGHT - That was a beautiful story - Plumeria is every where in Hawaii. I always buy the Plumeria products at Bath & Body works, its been my favorite scent for years. I never saw a plumeria plant for sale though . So if it grows big enough and I can hack off a stalk I will send you one definitely . They say it will be at least one year though.

it was the most beautiful thing i ever ever smelled!! even better than puppy breath or newborns!!

ohh Kathleen how lovely!!!
have to tell you..in 1979, January, i had just had to have my first newf put down. it was a horrid, awful decision made with love, and i was inconsolable, and so depressed and sad..but a trip had been planned for a year to see my sister and her then husband in Hawaii. My dad and i left 4 days after i had Sam put down. the flight was difficult, 5 layovers, then we got to honolulu and it was pouring. it rained the first 3 of the 10 days we were there, and i knew i would most likely never be able to go back, so on top of being sad about Sam, i was angry at the weather, and life in general.
on day 4 we went to the International marketplace. Just inside the front entrance as i walked in, some pretty lady in a muu muu sprayed me with something. Being in a mood, i was about to take her head off and all of a sudden was enveloped with this wonderful, lovely, calming scent. i literally cried it was so beautiful..and i'm not a cryer. all the hurt and sad and mad and disappointment came out...i felt like a fool standing there in this busy place bawling but somehow this very kind lady, with great understanding and intuition, took my arm and led me to the side, apologizing for spraying me and asking if there was anything she could do...i said no, thank you, you have done it...somehow you brought me heaven in that spray, and i feel a lot better...i told her what was up in the condensed version..all the while inhaling as deeply as i could of this scent i had never smelled before...
she handed me 2 boxes of it. said..its on me...please..if it makes you feel better i want you to have it.
i swear i bathed in that smell. i used the first bottle up in a month and carefully put the other away, just smelling it whenever i was down. i actually found the bottle about 2 weeks ago when i was looking for something else in the attic..unfortunately being 40 years old it no longer has that heady wonderful smell, but all the kindness of that woman came rolling back..if it works, and you think its possible to grow a clipping once you have it established, i'd be more than happy to pay to have it sent here. i've never seen the plant anywhere BUT hawaii, and would love to be able to have one. it really saved me at a time i thought i was unsavable and nothing would be right with the world again...
i so hope you can make it grow!!! thank you...memories came flooding backin a rush with that one!!

NIGHT - FYI there is a Vintage Pattern group on Facebook that sells and buys patterns Thought it might interest you.

Quilting-
So I have a large closet, packed with stuff I am working on in my quilting studio. My friends tease me about it because I always find so many little bags and boxes tucked here and there with more UFO quilting blocks. Yesterday I found another group of 2 1/2 " squares. I sewed them all into nine patch blocks and had enough to make 25 blocks. I swear they must be multiplying in there. LOL

KDGIRL - I thought you would appreciate this "possible"sewing project-
My DD & DGS ( 16 years) brought over her gown for her junior prom. It needed to be hemmed. Well, It was beyond my capabilities!

It is ( think Belle from Disney) a yellow strapless gown. The bust line is straight across and it goes into a fitted waist and flares out with all Tulle in layers. The bodice is all beaded in clear and silver beading which trails down over the hip area.
There are eight layers to the bottom of it. 5 layers of yellow Tulle, 1 full white stiff tulle crinoline, a yellow under liner with 2 ruffles of tulle, and another yellow under liner slip with tulle attached to the bottom!! YIKES!!!! I was afraid to cut it and ruin it. So DD is taking it to the tailors. LOL Since I usually tailor all her dress if necessary this one was way beyond my comfort zone!
But what a beautiful dress.

You can sell fabric ( anything) on Amazon or Esty sites even Craig's list. You follow their guidelines as to how to post & sell and then they take a small fee if someone buys. It is well worth it. I know many people who do this as a business. Anything you have can be sold. Patterns that are vintage are in high demand!
Everyday fabrics are also in demand. When I was making a Dr Seuss quilt I needed to buy cat in the hat fabric and could only find it online through Amazon. Also I needed vintage little red wagon fabric - again that is where I found it.

If you can post a picture of what you are selling on the site then it is easy.
Holly you must have a vintage fortune stashed up in your house.

KD I can't wait to see the Coronation dress when you are done.

You have a treasure trove Holly!!

I have been helping bead a Fiesta Coronation dress. The actual event is April 4 - and I've only done a small, small part of all the beading that needs to be done. I'll post a picture when it's okay with the committee!!

I have so much fabric.... how do you sell it on Etsy? Just post and mail? (oh - mine isn't vintage...)

no all the fabric is good i went through every piece and bolt and unfolded the yardage. i need to sort it..too cold to go up there now but when it warms up...

that dress sounds like a challenge. i used to make wedding and bridesmaids gowns when my daughter was first born as i decided to stay home with her and we couldnt make it on just my husbands income. everyone was into the jessica mcclintok dresses..long sleeve with then tight fitted forearms down and puffy upper sleeves (remember Princess Dianas wedding dress?) and then lace overlays on the bodice..tyed bodices...fitted bodice then poufy...they were fun i still have so many patterns..actually BOXES of old patterns from the 60s 70s and 80s. i was going to toss them then didnt..like i'd ever use them again. i wonder if theres any call for them?

Holly NY - You sure have enough stuff to keep you busy a long time. One inch squares is very tedious work. I haven't made anything smaller than 2 inch squares and that was for what is called a "watercolor" quilt. It will be worth the effort with all those memories in there.
You may be able to sell that vintage fabric online ( Esty) in yardage. A lot of quilters always look for vintage fabric online and at shows. As long as it isn't dry rot it is still good to sell.
Last week I took out a large bolt of black fabric which was from my grandmothers stash ( just sitting in my closet for years) and it just shredded in my hands. Too old so I had toss it.

My first love is patchwork quilts. Most of mine are patchwork and I always do scrappy. I have a ton of scraps all sorted by color variations any piece 2 inches or larger I keep.

KD when your life simmers down a bit you will get back to it I am sure. You mentioned working on beading? I forgot what you are doing.

My next adventure will be hemming and trimming my grand daughters prom gown. I haven't seen it yet but it has six layers of Tulle over a liner!! Sounds like fun- NOT! I usually hem her gowns but this may be a challenge. After I look at it -it may need to go to the tailor for a hem.

Kathleen I did a challenge like that when I was in Okinawa - it was fabric that had bunches of cherries on it. It was totally ugly fabric - but when chopped up enough and added to other fabrics, it turned out lovely. I made a runner and gave it to my mother-in-law who keeps nothing. I have no idea how long she kept it before getting rid of it. Needless to say I don't quilt her anything these days.

Holly you have a bunch of stuff to keep you busy for the rest of your life!!

I'm too busy for quilting these days. It will always be there though!!

actually that sounds lovely Kathleen!!

i know my opinion on this is unpopular, but i love the old patchwork quilts the best. trip around the world..hunters star, 9 patch..the new modern ones dont move me at all. i love old fashioned and thats why i started quilting back when i was a teenager. i started my first full size when i was 23 and pregnant with my first...i asked family and friends for small scraps of fabrics that meant something to them, and to tell me the story. its a double irish chain, and most would look at it and say why did you use yellowed background?
because to me i love quilts that tell a story. in this quilt are the fabrics from my maternity shirts (i sewed all my clothes back then). my uncle who passed had a favorite shirt..those pieces are in there. I made my baby a dress out of tiny teddy bear matierial, and pieced them into the chain so it looks like the bear is somersaulting. There is a piece there from my granmothers apron. i never met any of my grandparents, so its especially meaningfull to me. pieces from some of the dresses i made to show my dog..one from the westminster show one year. and that yellowed background? when my dad was honorably discharged from WW2 they let the men take their bedding. this is the sheets from his cots....so i will always remember the sacrifice and hardships they had, and that i was one of the lucky ones that had my dad come home.
its not finished. i dont know if i will ever finish it..its totally pieced, and a lot of the hand quilting is done. but i picked a hard one for my first one, with the notion that if i did a really hard one first, then i knew i could do it and the rest would be easy. but hand quilting little 1" squares takes forever.takes me about a week a full 12" square IF i work on it constantly. so i take it out sometimes...smile at the memories, quilt a square, and put it away. someday!!
in between i made a dresden plate in browns for my best friends wedding. 2 baby quilts in pastel ginghams doing dresden plate, and 2 in churndash same colors. a windmill for one son. 2 trip around the worlds for my parents. a star quilt for my sister. bear paw for one son. horse theme for my daughter.
i pieced mountains for one i'm working on for youngest son, and designed a 4 sail clipper ship for one for my middle son. next up is one for my daughter...she likes adirondack rustic so that will be the theme. i have a grandmothers attic fully pieced and needing the outside borders then quilting. i hand quilt so they take a while!
i've done yoyo quilts...and many pillows (i do a pillow to be sure i like the pattern before i do a whole quilt)

Kathleen i so wish you were closer. i have an attic FULL..and i mean full..of fabric. my adopted grandmother was a seamstress. she bought NO clothes. i have literally BOLTS of fabric. boxes of it. there is a quilt guild here in town..and i talked to a couple members about coming and making me an offer on some. this is fabric from the 50s up through the 90s...when they werent so cheap with it. They dont seem interested as they all do that color gradient thing with the solids..and these are mostly calicos and print fabrics.
so i keep plugging along. my cathedral window will be the same type as my irish chain...pieces from people i love, memories stitched into something useful.

i so love quilts!!

KD that sounds great. Hawaii is beautiful.

Yesterday I worked on the quilt challenge project. We were given a panel ( boring blue white paint streaked design) and we must use it to make any quilt we want. I used the blue streaks as a stream mixed with frosted silver fabric to look like icy water scene. Not enjoying this but I wanted to try to make something. I don't know why I always enter these challenges, not my favorite thing to do. LOL

Cathedral window quilts are so beautiful. It will be worth all the work HOLLYNY

Kathleen and Holly - I'm so impressed! I'm working on painting the office so it's ready when DH comes home. Now that I'm going to retire... I will probably be spending more time in Hawaii and will not be home as much. Not that I'm complaining... emoticon

I have so many projects going now!

Knitting a Jade sparkle green scarf.

Knitting a pale multi-blue shawl.

Sewing: Making two cinnamon rice Hot Pads for a guild exchange.

Appliqueing a few flowers on a finished baby quilt for donation.

Quilting: I started a quilt challenge using a panel of fabric due this April.
Pieces are all cut up and on the table - not a clue as to what I am doing. LOL

One project after another- I am always working on something.
What are you all working on?

Holly - Here is an idea for your yarn.
I love knitted Ponchos. Here is a simple pattern to knit.

Using 9 inch needles CAST ON 90 stitches.
Knit either in Stockinette or Garter stitch until your piece measures 72 inches long. Bind off.

You now have a long rectangle that should be 72 inches long.

FOLD that rectangle in half lengthwise ( short sides together and
Whip stitch the long sides together leaving a 10 inch space ( near the fold) for your head.
When you put it on over your head the hem will have a point in the front and point in the back. You can wear it like that or turn it so points are over your arms.

I use this pattern all the time. It will work well with Alpaca yarn.

I am into the throes of spring cleaning and the more I do the more I want to do---as I really like the finished product! .. tossed all my old spices, totally purged the cupboards and bought new spices .... Even went through drawers---got rid of lots of stuff and tackling the garage! (Not far from being done) ..

Susan I love your S&W!! There are many different ways to put them together - I think yours sort of looks like a crazy quilt!! I've made many of those - I still have one with materials from lingerie (I lived in Korea for 2 years - it was custom made and those silky materials were thrown away so I had a deal with some of the vendors to give me scraps) and I have yet to actually quilt it. I've sort of lost interest, but I still have it.

Bev Anne, your photos are absolutely beautiful. I'm so glad you are sharing them.

KD, I have made a Stack and Slash quilt. Here it is. I thought it was a variation of the kind you described, but after watching the video you linked I thin k it is very different! I started with 15" blocks of solid fabric stacked on top of each other, then I slashed through them at an angle. I swapped out half a block with a different fabric for each block and stitched them together. Then I stacked the blocks again and slashed them a different way, swapped out the halves and sewed again, etc...it makes a nice knee quilt. I take it with me in the caravan when we travel and have used it so many times.

About cardmaking and having my own papercraft room, I only got that to happen about four years ago. I have never had a dedicated craft room before that and always had pokey corners of the house to work in. It's shear luxury to have a dedicated room now. There were always kids and other relatives in the house needing bedrooms before then. Four years ago my brother finally moved out and built his own home, so I grabbed his room. Now I need a dedicated sewing room, but hubby isn't listening! Lol! I am fortunate to have a quilting friend/teacher who has a warehouse sized shed for her quilting classes. She used to have a big curtain making business. So I quilt there almost exclusively. It works for us all!

The Cards for Troops drive is very rewarding and also a lot of work. But I enjoy it so won't stop till they tell me to. Then I will just find another charity to support. I have a lot of people all over Australia who just love to make cards all year and give them to the Troops. I can't let them down by stopping the Drive :)

BEV ANNE - Your photo is breathtaking! I am always amazed how some people just have a natural gift for taking incredible photos. I on the other hand have trouble not cutting someone head off in a family pic. LOL

Yes, that quilt is not your average style quilt. It is what we refer to as "An Art Quilt". Not easy to make that one. I can appreciate the talent it took to make it but it is not my style. The fact that it is a log cabin block is mind blowing.

Like KD I am a scrappy quilter. Most of the time it is "organized" scrappy. Love just having fun with fabrics. Stack & Whack is so much fun. I did one when with our guild one year.

I love colour but that log cabin design does not look like any log cabin I ever saw and I don't like the optical illusion effect. Although I don't sew or quilt I love the idea of a quilt made from pieces of old clothes that bring back memories. I have never had one -- I just like the idea.

I understand wanting to take classes -- I take photography seminars from time to time and also I am just finishing up an online course called "A Year with my Camera". I am currently facilitating a group from our local Photography club that started the course last September. I also attended a 4-day workshop in Banff two years ago with a photographer whom I consider to be one of my mentors. Here is one of my favourites from that workshop:

Stack and Whack is taking 6 coordinating fabrics and cutting them into squares. Like 30" squares. Or 24. I don't really remember.

Then you place them on top of each other, and make one random cut. You put one half of the top on on the bottom, and then you sew the two parts together. Then you have 6 29.5" squares. Or close. then you cut it again, take one top and put it on the bottom, and sew the two sides together again. I think you do it 5-6 times.

Every time you make a random cut (not corner to corner) and you sew them back together. It's total randomness with the six fabrics, so cool looking. You can then do pinwheels with them, or just sew them in rows for a quilt. So cool, especially when you have interesting fabric to start with. Usually you have a main fabric, and several supporting fabrics.

Has anyone else ever done it?

I agree with you Holly. I love scrappy quilts. They are my favorite. That looks like a curvy window pane pattern - never my favorite and hard to implement. I took every class I could for 2 years, and some classes made me realize what I didn't like!!

Now I'm ready to do a stack and whack - has anyone ever done that? I love mine from when the boys were little. I'll try and find them and post a pic.

this morning a friend on facebook posted a picture of a new kind of log cabin quilt. i think its hideous. i just dont like all the new color schemes..the patterns make me dizzy. give me a scrappy, old fashioned look anyday. that said, many love this kind. just not my style..

what do you all think? am i just way behind the times or is this pretty horrible? (i CAN appreciate the workmanship...)

BEV ANNE- Love the picture, just beautiful. . Your DGS is so cute too.

SUSAN - You are lucky to have a room just for your craft. Sounds like a great hobby and business you have going. That convention trip should be fun and interesting. Whenever I go to quilt shows I always try and take a workshop. There is always something new to learn.

Love the thought of making cards - I just don't have room or temperament for doing it! I have a friend who's sister has such a craft room in Austin Susan - and we can go there for $10 and make cards once in awhile. We're having a girls' weekend up there in April, so maybe we'll do that!

Lovely pictures Bev Anne - I'd love to do a long drive through in Canada one of these days. Or years... once I've retired anyway. It sounds like a great camper idea.

KD, I love your baby quilt. Yes, it does take hours of work to make quilts, doesn't it. I can't imagine making money at it as no one will pay for all that labour. That's why I just make for family and close friends!

As for card making, I have made quite a hobby of it. I have a dedicated paper craft room for working in and run classes at home as well. Hubby and i just revamped it. I don't make any money out of it but it helps pay for my own supplies! Each year I run a card drive, collecting cards to send to our Troops deployed overseas. Last year I think there were around 2,000 cards collected and sent. I get to travel with my crafting as well and am off to New Zealand in April for a week of 'convention' with hundreds of other mad crafters....

I love that photo of Banff. It is one of my favourite places in the world. Lake Louise is a pretty close second favourite place!

When I started to do my scrapbooks digitally I still had all the tools for papercrafts so I facilitated a card making group at our senior's centre in Victoria. I still have some of the tools and stickers but I do all my cards digitally these days. The ones for the grandkids get printed but the rest just get sent online. Here is a picture of my oldest grandson with his card this year -- taken by his Mom.

Here is another of my favourite photos from 2018 taken in Banff, AB:

KD - The baby quilt came out great. With the color scheme and pattern you used Baby will enjoy that one for years.

SUSAN- Nice masculine cards. Many years ago I decided to make my own Christmas cards. Lots of fun but a lot of work. I enjoyed it but I only did it once.

Everyone's quilts and cards and pictures are beautiful!!

I know how long it takes to do crafts - if I got paid what I make at my day job for quilting, I could retire in a year for the rest of my life. It's definitely a work of love.

Here is my finished baby quilt for my niece. I machine quilted it, and hand sewed the binding. I figure it probably took me about 20-22 hours all told.

We're back! Now for the system to get back to normal. Took an EXTRA 500 mg of Magnesium.
BTW at this breakfast I had filet mignon, two eggs, slice of roasted tomato! Oh and a little bearnaise sauce.

Wow! Your quilts are beautiful -- I don't think I would have the patience for one of those let alone the sewing skills but I have done knitted and/or crocheted afghans. I have a knitting project on the go but I haven't done much on it for a long time.

ok i just took a bunch of pictures..lol

grandmothers attic. still needs borders, basting then quilting.

this is the one i'm working on for my youngest son. hes a backpacker..its going to have 12" squares all around with trees, hiking boots, backpack, walking stick, a lean to, bears, deer, etc. then borders.

this was my very first quilt. its a double irish chain variation, and very personal. i can tell you where every single piece of fabric came from. and the white is sheets my dad brought back from ww2. they may be a little discolored, but the whole point of the quilt was for the memories. its not done because i quilt around every seam, and the little squares are 1" each, and quilting takes FOREVER.

some scarves i knitted...love this stitch!!

and last...i did these one night last week watching tv..found the stuff for them and wanted them done..lol. my eyes are getting too old for cross stitch.

Yes, that is an Annas hummingbird. We have them all year round here on Vancouver Island -- even when it snows.

I used to do papercrafts -- scrapbooking and card making but now I do them digitally -- I make photobooks and cards as well as other projects from my photography. Here are some of the projects I have done lately.

The photobook on the left is a mini version of my daughter's wedding album (which I also did) and the mug on the right is an abstract photo which I made by manipulating the original photo in Photoshop. The cover on the photobook behind on the right is also done the same way. The mug with my picture on it also has my name on the opposite side -- I have made several of those for friends.

Gringuita, is that a hummingbird? It's beautiful. I love birdwatching and photography. Maybe you would like to see a pic of an Emu I took last year? I live in Australia.

Nightskystar, thank you for your compliments about my quilt and scrapbook page. Your Cathedral Window quilt is spectacular. And I tried roasting my corned beef tonight! It turned out so well. Thank you for suggesting that way of cooking it. I made Keto Bechemal Sauce and fried cabbage and steamed green beans to go with it.

Beautiful photo, and I am loving that we get to see each other's quilts!

This is the most complicated one I ever made. It was for my now dearly departed Mother. I have it again now, which is bittersweet. Each block is a different design.

I will get some pics of the Nine Patch Pizzazz I am making next time I get to go quilting. It isn't ready to be laid out in rows yet.

Very retty Bev Anne thanks for sharing!!

this is the cathedral window quilt i am working on..you can see the strip i added today at the top...have one new "pane" done...so..i added a strip of 8..which, once you get that strip done plus all the full squares made for the add on, is 16 panes for this strip. when thats done i'll add on another..then stich in those 16 panes, and so on. when i get it the width i want, i'll start on the next section. its just too big and heavy to sew every strip on and do all the panes once on. you dont put it in a hoop, so you are dealing with a lot of layers of fabric. defiinitely the warmest quilt i've ever made with all the folded layer!
edited to add..the addes strip is on the left not top of picture as it did its sideways thing...lol
