Low carbing is very difficult to maintain long term but smart carbing (complex carbs balanced with fiber and healthy proteins) is helping me to manage my pre-diabetic condition.

No, we need carbs for energy, so if we lower it, we're in trouble of going off our diet for good(maybe)!

I just started the Belly Fat Cure Diet by Jorge Cruise, and I love it! I had friends that did the Atkins diet, and while they had great success (and kept it off!)...to me it seemed a little unhealthy. So the BFC diet seems like a good compromise of the Atkins diet, because you are still allowed carbs! The point of this diet is to minimize sugar and carbs. And like many of the posters have said when I eat carbs I make sure I get healthy ones that are high in fiber. I don't feel like it's a diet more like just choosing healthy foods. And even though high fatty meats are freebies on this diet I still try to choose healthy/lean meats, i.e. turkey bacon over bacon, low fat cheese, etc. And even though he says don't worry about your calorie count, I still try to make sure that I'm within my target range. I just started on monday and I am already down 6 lbs.

And I'm sure if you cut out most of the crap alone you would still lose some weight, but I'm also working out with a trainer, walking, and fitness classes! So I'm definitely for the low carb diet..not eliminating them completely!

Definitely NOT especially for long term results and your sanity. You need energy from carbs to workout hard and in general I think diets that severely limit any type of food/food category aren't healthy. The secret to losing weight and keeping it off is....healthy eating and exercise. no gimis or diets, just good fresh food in moderation and an active lifestyle- go figure emoticon

Having done South Beach in the past and losing over 40 lbs in 3 months, sure they work, but I do not think they're healthy, especially not if you're working out. As someone said, carbs provide energy. I found that especially during the first phase of South Beach, I was tired and irritable the whole time. Not to mention no sooner than you don't keep up with it, you put the weight on FAST! I think the best thing is to eat the right carbs, i.e. complex carbs, like whole grains, and just keep a balanced diet. If I were you, I would probably switch my lunch and dinner, just so you're not eating so heavy at night.

I do. I have done Atkins in the past and am doing it now. It works for me. It is all about what you can stick with. I can stick with Atkins. When you get to ongoing weight loss and maintenance, you get to have more carbs. Most people don't understand the plan fully and therefore fail at it. Read the book and see if it is something you can stick with.

I think a SENSIBLE CARB plan is what is in order. South Beach, the Medeteranean diet, the Sonoma Diet are all based around good carbs and controlled carbs. My son and I are starting with the Jorge Cruise Belly Fat Cure for 2 months and then we will be transitioning to one of the above mentioned or something similar.

I think low carb works in the short term. A diet with mostly vegetables and lean meats (chicken, turkey, fish) is bound to allow you to drop pounds quickly. I did atkins a few years ago and lost 25 lbs in 2 months BUT I gained it all back once I started eating breads and pasta.

I think a better approach is to try to include high fiber carbs (whole grains, etc.) into your diet and limit overall carb intake to less than 60% of your calories for the day. I've lost almost 30 lbs since joining spark one year ago and I did it without depriving myself of breads and pasta- I just eat wheat bread, whole wheat pasta, brown rice and sweet potatoes!

A diet that's low in carbohydrates and High in meats? I don't see how it can be healthy. a diet like that can damage your arteries not only that it raises your risk for getting heart disease. we get our energy sources from our carbohydrates. believe it or not it can also have negative effects in the brain. so I cant really see the logic in doing that. not that I'm trying to put anyone down for using it however be weary when it comes to using this type of diet. use it for more of a short term use so that it wont have any damaging effects to your body. always always always do your research before you do any type of diet. right now I'm planning on doing the low gi diet that encourages you to eat your fruits and vegetables consuming your carbs "healthy carbs such as wheat and wholegrain." in moderation as well as meat an using healthy fats.

I am a firm believer in a low carb diet. Because basically, it's all about sugar. And when you reduce your sugar, your body responds. But please realize that low carb is only designed to be used for only a certain amount of time, at a time. It's a way to jumpstart your body...not to live. Try it! I highly recommend the South Beach Diet.

The best kind of diet is the one YOU can stick to! I don't believe in eliminating any foods because I like to cook and I enjoy food.

It seems like your way of eating is working for you so why change? You are doing a great job!!

I do the Food Lovers eating plan and this way of eating talks about the difference between "Fast Carbs" and "Slow Carbs" and how you combine them. I am down 6 pounds in 6 days. On this plan it is combining foods, portion control and eating 6 times a day varying snack and meal. It works for me.

It all comes down to eating healthy, And eating from all the food groups to get the nutrients that are needed. And if you exercise and watch what you eat you will loose weight, at your pace.

I have been researching low carb diets such as Atkins and the ZONE. I like the reasons behind low carb dieting, even though these programs are too extreme for me. Over the past week or more, I have drastically cut my carbs to around 10-15 grams. Instead of bagels and cereal and juice, I eat eggs and fruit for breakfast. Instead of subs for lunch, I have salads with other veggies and a protein source. And for dinner, I have another salad and maybe a bit of pasta or a sandwich, a protein source, and fruit.

After eating this way for several days, I can't even think about eating more than a couple bites of a processed carb source like bread or pasta. If I take more than a couple of bites, I get so bloated and sick feeling. At dinner, I am usually so hungry (craving) for carbs, but I end up picking my sandwiches a part and just eating the meat, cheese, and lettuce. I think too many carbs are like a poison to my body. Especially if I eat something really sweet. I feel shaky and weird after eating a big piece of cake.

I haven't started my exercise program yet, but I did change my diet. I swear by low carb. I feel that it is the reason I feel much better throughout the day.

SP has helped me with the amount of carbs I need to have. I'm not a carb person and I struggle to meet my carb minimums, but I know it's important to have the balance.

I never gave much thought about carbs until I joined Spark People. The Spark Diet is helping me be aware of what I'm consuming. I now keep a close eye on my nutrition, and try to stay within normal limits for carbs, protein & fat. I don't think that I could do South Beach diet... carbs are always calling my name. lol

I believe in it, but the weight comes back if your not used to eating that way. I have seen great success and disappointment with friends and family, so I never tried it 100%. Low carb is a lifestyle itself; kinda like being a vegan.

It has to become your way of life to have long standing success.

You may need to eat 4 to 5 times a day if you are that hungry. The meals should be small. 3 meals might not be enough especially if you are working out alot.

I am gaining so fast I can't keep up with it.
Going back to the menu plan.
1220-1550 is high for me. Struggling to keep up with it.
I had 3 oz of chicken strips. I used chicken breast as a charter. I made sure it was not more than 3 oz.

I have recently started exercising 3days a week. Lots of cardio and some moderate weight training. I am eating only three meals a day with protein shakes in with my first two meals. Also a protein shake in between meals. My only complaint is that when I get home from work around 6ish, I am usually starving... then I eat whatever is laying out on the counter whatever is convenient. That's why I've been off my plan for a couple days.

I have also been on a low carb/low cal diet. I lost about 6lbs in a week. I'm sure some of that was water weight...But still I was very pleased. However lately I have been having a hard time sticking to my plan. I have to go weigh in sometime this week, so hopefully that will help get me back on track. emoticon

I don't really diet nor look at my carb intake. I just eat my 3 main meals with snacks in between every 3 hours and that works for me. I do drink protein shakes that are carb control twice a day. My protein carb control shake has 17g of protein. Before joining SP I lost 11 pounds in a month and half, since joining at the beginning of Feb. I have only lost 6 pounds. Now I am wondering do I need to try to cut some more carbs????

It doesn't sound like you have cut all carbs. Make sure the carbs that you do get have plenty of fiber. Are you exercising? If you are then you will need some carbs.

I eat like that except that I have three snacks a day. Smaller portions and more meals keeps the metabolism going strong. I'm doing a cross between a medium to low carb, beachy, clean type of diet at the moment. Just started today. Other than that your meals look good.

I tried low carbs and high protein and I did lose weight too. But I did not feel good doing it. I felt tired and weak. When I quit the weight came back just as fast as I lost it.

Hey Queens,
My method for weight loss has been to cut out most carbs and the ones that I do eat, I always make sure that it's paired with a high protein product. It's been working for me so far but I would love to know what you girls think.
A typical day for me would consist of

Breakfast
-1 Grapefruit and a protein shake
Lunch
-Spring mix lettuce, with tomatoes, cucumbers, onions
-1 can of flavoured tuna, with low fat kraft italian dressing
Dinner
-1 high protein pita stuffed with chicken breast, sautéed onions and peppers and low fat cheese
Dessert
1 cup of jello/pudding (low fat)

So far I lost over 20lbs in 28 days
So ladies, is this a healthy meal plan..hmmmm? Tell me what you think
