Winter is here. I find it helpful to walk around the house, do stairs, and always have my legs covered in warm blankets while in bed. Compression hose seem to help the pain some too.

I am grateful that there is so much more information about certain illnesses, diseases, just have to take the time and read. With dealing with pain every day, there are so many other alternatives to help our bodies.
Just a few things I was thinking today

* Stay positive
* Never give up
* Don't be afraid to ask for help and support especially on Sparkpeople, we are all here to help each other

I was so excited today by something most people would laugh at. For the first time in I don't know how long, I was able to turn all the way around and look out the rear window of my car while I was driving. My mobility has been suffering greatly due to my weight and my arthritis and today was an awesome day. I know that with a lot of determination and willpower anyone can see the greatness in the small things in life.

Nothing is impossible! If you can dream it, you can do it.

When you exercise, your body releases chemicals called endorphins. These endorphins interact with the receptors in your brain that reduce your perception of pain.

Endorphins also trigger a positive feeling in the body, similar to that of morphine. For example, the feeling that follows a run or workout is often described as "euphoric." That feeling, known as a "runner's high," can be accompanied by a positive and energizing outlook on life.

Purpose in Paradox

The purposes of God are a paradox to the earthly mind. He teaches patience in waiting, singing in sorrow and contentment when faced with unmet desires. The weight of our circumstances reminds us that we cannot carry them alone, and that we must cry out to God who is our only hope. He is faithful. He will not abandon us. Deuteronomy 33:26-27 Even when we feel we cannot take another step, He urges us on. At times when we just know our hearts will break if we hear one more word of discouragement. He lets us know that He will keep us. Psalm 41:2 He knows that if we would stretch to do what we think is impossible we will come that much closer to his goal of our understanding that when it is darkest, He is our light, Psalm 139: 11 & 12, when we are weakest, He is our strength, 2 Corinthians 12 and that we don't have to see before we believe. John 20: 24 - 29

Stop! Drop! Roll!

Mary Southerland

Today's Truth

Luke 2:52 "Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men."

Friend to Friend

A friend recently sent me the following message in an email with a subject line that said, "I immediately thought of you when I read this!"

"Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body. But rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out and loudly proclaiming, "Wow, what a ride!"

As I read the words on the computer screen, I wasn't sure if I had just received a sweet compliment or some badly needed correction - or both. The part about arriving at the grave in a pretty and well preserved body was flattering, but the part about being thoroughly used up and totally worn out - well, not so much. My next thought was, "Boredom is highly underrated!" I suspect that the truth lies somewhere in between, maybe around the area of balance.

Contrary to popular belief and the way that I have lived a great deal of my life, "balance" is not a dirty word. In fact, a balanced life is a powerful life. It must be. I wrote those words in one of my books. I also stated that a busy life is not necessarily a productive life. I think it is time for a refresher course on how to find God's balance in life because being out of balance is not a good thing. When our finances are out of balance, we hear from the bank. When the washer is out of balance, it dances across the floor. When the tires on our car are out of balance, the ride is rough. But when our life is out of balance, disaster is just around the corner.

As I was praying about this devotional, the Father brought to mind my elementary school days when the firemen came to our school to teach us what we should do in case we ever caught on fire. I remember the drill clearly. Stop! Drop! Roll! Let's apply that same drill to the area of balance.

Stop!
When was the last time you stopped, got off the merry-go-round and out of the fast lane to take a long, hard look at your life? It is so easy to live each day just doing "the next thing" that comes along. The "one size fits all" mentality about life plans is from the pit and smells like smoke, girlfriend. God has a plan for your life that is unique and you are the only person who can be "you." Build on your strengths. Accept your limitations and yield to the seasons of life. Get in the Word and ask God to show you His plan.

Drop!
Once you discover your life plan, eliminate anything that does not fit that plan. Learn to invest your time instead of just spending it or allowing others to steal it. Choose to budget your time just like you budget your money and learn to say "no" without feeling guilty. We are all responsible for how we spend the time God has given us. Every morning we are credited with 86,400 seconds. No balance is carried into the next day and every night erases what we fail to use.

Roll!
Roll away the burdens you are carrying and learn the value of resting in God. Every opportunity to worry is also an opportunity to trust Him. I heard a story about a man who had to cross a wide river on the ice. He was afraid it might be too thin, so he began to crawl on his hands and knees in fear, thinking he would fall through the icy surface at any time. Just as he neared the opposite shore, exhausted and weak, another man glided past him sitting on a sled loaded with iron. The promises of God will not break under the weight of any problem or trial you will ever face. Take Him at His Word. Let God be God in your life and trust Him.

When Jesus was twelve years old, He traveled to Jerusalem with His parents for the annual Passover Celebration. When Mary and Joseph began the long trip home, they assumed Jesus was traveling with friends. When they realized Jesus was missing, their search found Him at the temple, teaching.

Don't miss this important truth. Jesus returned home with His parents and spent the next twenty years growing and maturing. Luke 2:52 tells us that "Jesus grew in wisdom, in stature, and in favor with God and men." Then in Luke 3, we see Jesus as He began His ministry on earth. Don't miss this important truth! Jesus grew mentally and emotionally, physically, spiritually and socially. His life was balanced - before He began His ministry. You may be waiting for your life to just fall into place, hoping that the things you are doing will achieve balance. The opposite is true. A powerful life comes from a balanced life. Now is the time for you to stop ... drop ... and roll.

Let's Pray

Father, I am tired. My life is out of control and I don't know what to do. Please help me examine my priorities by Your standards and expectations and live for Your pleasure and glory. I choose now to trust You, knowing that You are in control whether it looks like it or not. My faith is weak, Lord. Strengthen me to do what You created me to do.

In Jesus' name,

Amen.

Now It's Your Turn

Set aside time to come before God, in total surrender and with a willing heart. Ask Him to show you His plan. Choose to follow that plan now.

The Good Side of Conflict

Lysa TerKeurst

"A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger."

Proverbs 15:1 (NIV)

Devotion:

When I was in my early twenties, there was nothing I disliked more than conflict. I won't use the tired cliché that I avoided it like the plague. But, since I just used it anyhow, I'll admit I tried to navigate around conflict at any cost.

I was a 'stuff it and smile' kind of girl. The problem with pretending to be fine when you're really not, is all that pent up steam will eventually come out. And if you've ever held your hand too close to steam, you know how it can burn.

A much healthier approach to the inevitable conflicts we all must deal with is to face the issue head on with grace and humility having asked ourselves one very crucial question. This question is so crucial that might I dare say not asking it could lead to extreme conflict escalation rather than relationship restoration.

So, what's this crucial question?

Am I trying to prove or improve? That's the question. In other words, is my desire in this conflict to prove that I am right or to improve the relationship at hand?

When I try to prove I am right, I use the circumstances of the conflict as an arsenal to attack the other person. I come armed with past hurts and offenses ready to state my case. I'm tempted to tear down the other person. I react from a place of hurt and anger and can often say things I later regret.

On the other hand, when my desire is to improve the relationship, I seek to understand where the other person is coming from and I care enough about the relationship to fight for it rather than against it. Instead of reacting out of anger, I pause and let the Holy Spirit interrupt my first impulses. I tackle the issues, not the person.

Here are some great questions to ask when we're dealing with conflict out of a desire to improve a relationship:

•Can you help me understand why you feel this way?
•Why don't we both agree to stick to the issue at hand and not pull in past issues?
•What is your desired outcome in this situation?
•How can we meet in the middle on this issue?
My husband I have renamed what we used to call "fights." We now call them "growth opportunities." And the more we've been practicing these principles, the less conflicts we've been having.

But I won't tie this devotion up in a neat bow and end all "cheerio." While Art and I are doing great right now and have had very few "growth opportunities" lately, conflicts with others seem to always be around the corner. So please hear my heart, I'm not saying all of this is easy. Just this week I've had to tackle some growth opportunities that made me feel like I had fire crackers burning through my veins.

Maybe you can relate.

What I will say is that it's possible to let those conflicts lead us to better places in our relationships. Improved places. And that is the good side of conflict.

Dear Lord, help me to realize that with each conflict I face I can make the choice to improve the relationship rather than try and prove I'm right. This is hard, Lord, really hard. But, I want to grow in this area and I know this is a good place to start. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

The Truth is in the Handbag

Shari Braendel

"Since you are my rock and my fortress, for the sake of your name lead and guide me." Psalm 31:3 (NIV)

Devotion:

I recently watched as a frazzled shopper fumbled around in her bag trying to find her allusive keys. As she dug through her overstuffed purse, multiple items spilled out, landing on the counter and falling to the floor. Quickly, she began collecting her items.

I thought about her pretty purse, beautiful on the outside but hiding an unruly mess on the inside. And then I started thinking about how alike women and purses can be.

Maybe you're like a small purse that only has the capacity to hold a few things. Yet you try stuffing more into your life than you can hold, only to get frustrated. Perhaps one of those things is God: He's been crammed into a tiny space in your world and you don't give Him much room to rule because you feel more comfortable when you are in control.

Perhaps you're like a big purse, carrying all kinds of things. You're involving yourself in so many activities just because you can; with no real purpose to why you're doing it. You end up flustered like the shopper digging for her keys because you haven't spent the time needed to organize your spiritual life.

I know you're not a handbag, but when applying biblical truth and application, what kind of purse are you most like?

It's not God's desire for our inside to be out of sync with our outside. He desires for us to have our hearts turned toward Him and have our very pulse in beat with what He is doing in us.

Where should we start to curb the chaos, release our controlling tendencies and lighten the busyness to fall in step with God?

Start by being still. For some, that will go against every fiber of your being, but try it. Perhaps you abide in chaos because it's masking what is really going on with you, just like your pretty purse hides the unorganized mess within. Sit quietly and pray for God to help you be keenly aware of Him. Nothing that you are going through is a surprise to God.

Next, relax and trust the Lord. Sometimes feeling out of control causes you to hyper-control everything around you. Let go of your fears, doubts and worries and make room for God in your life.

Finally, clear your calendar. We overbook and over-schedule out of habit and now busy feels normal. Is your fast pace driven by fear, or does it define your value or identity? If so, re-evaluate where your time and energy are being spent and why.

Making a change doesn't come easily, but it can be done. Although seeking out time with God, learning to trust Him, and reorganizing your priorities can feel uncomfortable and difficult at first, I know for sure that it's not nearly as hard as living overcommitted and out of control.

Together, let's commit to cleaning out our "purses!"

Dear Father, will You please meet me right here, right now and quiet my heart so that I can rest and regroup? Thank You for the comfort of knowing that while I sometimes get waylaid, You never take Your eyes from me. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

A Box of Socks
Mary Southerland
Today's Truth
Matthew 21:22 (NIV) "If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask for in prayer."
Friend To Friend
My sister loves socks! One day, we were shopping and happened to walk into a department store where neither one of us could afford to buy one single thing. We were just passing through, on our way to find the bargains we could afford. With a sigh and a wistful look on her face, Betty said, "I wish I could afford to shop in this store." When I asked her what she would buy, she immediately replied with a smile, "Socks! I want a big box of socks. I would wear a different pair every day." I could think of several things I would have liked to buy in that store and socks was not one of them. I guess it is a matter of perspective. What was important to her was not important to me.
I sometimes think my prayer requests are insignificant and unimpressive to God. After all, He is God. Does He really have the time or the desire to hear and answer my prayers? Yes! The truth is that if it is important to me, it is important to God.
Each Christmas, Operation Shoebox collects and sends over eight million shoeboxes stuffed with small gifts such as candy, school supplies, small toys, toothbrushes, soap, and shampoo to children across the world. In Mexico, hundreds of boys and girls gathered at the church in a small village, excitedly anticipating the arrival of their precious shoeboxes.
Delightful chaos erupted as bulging shoeboxes, wrapped in brightly colored paper and ribbon were passed into the small, eager hands of each child. Wrapping paper was hurriedly ripped into pieces and tossed aside, a smile spreading across the face of each child as their long awaited Christmas treasures were revealed. However, one little boy dissolved into tears as he lifted the lid of his box and peered inside to see what he had received for Christmas this year.
One of the Operation Shoebox volunteers spotted the little boy and hurriedly made his way across the church to see what the problem could possibly be. With the help of an interpreter, the volunteer asked the now sobbing little boy, "What is wrong? What is in your box?" With tears streaming down his face, the little boy said, "Socks!" The worker instantly understood and assured the little boy that he could trade his box of socks for another box that might have crayons or a piece of candy in it.
Alarm spread across the face of the child as he vigorously shook his head and quickly jerked the box away from the now somewhat confused worker. Clutching the shoebox to his chest, the boy began sobbing out an explanation to the interpreter who listened for a few moments and then, with tears spilling out of his own eyes, turned to the volunteer and said, "You won't believe this!"
Taking a deep, steadying breath, the interpreter explained, "This little boy has a rare skin condition with which he was born. It seems to affect his feet more than any other spot on his body. The doctors have tried various medications and treatments but finally told the little boy that nothing will work and his feet will never heal unless he begins wearing cotton socks. His parents cannot even afford food for this boy; much less provide socks for their son. So, all year long, he has been praying for socks."
Socks were at the top of the little boy's prayer list. As a matter of fact, they were his list. The mere sight of ordinary cotton socks brought tears to his eyes as he stared in awe at the priceless gift in his hands - socks. You see, they were more than just socks. They were the profound answer from our extraordinary God to a child's simple prayer. One unknown and seemingly insignificant boy in Mexico prayed. God heard him and said "Let me take care of you."
No matter how small or trivial your prayers may seem, remember God's perspective. If it is important to you, it is important to Him.
Let's Pray
Father, thank You for the privilege of coming before You in prayer. I want prayer to be as natural to me as breathing out and breathing in. I refuse to believe the lie that my prayers are too small or unimportant for You to hear. You are my Father. You are my God and You long to hear my voice. I will bring every prayer of my heart to You.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
Now It's Your Turn
Do you have your own "box of socks" for which you are praying? What is it?
Do you really believe that God will hear and answer your prayer?
Read Hebrews 11:6. How does your faith measure up to the faith described in this verse?
Today, pray in faith and see what God does!

A Word to the Wise
Mary Southerland
Today's Truth
"This is what the LORD All-Powerful, the God of Israel, says: Go and tell the men of Judah and the people of Jerusalem: 'Will you not learn a lesson and obey my words,' declares the LORD" Jeremiah 35:13 (NIV).
Friend To Friend
Our grandson, Justus, just celebrated his first birthday. And we are scrambling to child-proof everything in our home! I did not realize how many drawers and cabinets we have until Justus decided it was time to explore every single one of them looking for a "ball." He is just like his mother when she was a toddler - curious and always on the go.
When Danna was about three years old, she became utterly fascinated with electrical outlets. One of her favorite activities was working the childproof cover off of an electrical outlet in order to insert toys and various household items in the funny little holes. Needless to say, I was not thrilled with this game. Over and over, several times a day, I took her to the outlet and said firmly, "No! No! No! It will hurt you!" She would look up at me with her beautiful brown eyes and dimpled smile in angelic agreement. After several trips to the outlet I thought, "She's got it!" And she did - for two whole days. While putting groceries away, I heard a piercing scream from the family room. When I reached Danna, I found a sobbing toddler holding up a tiny burned finger for me to kiss and make better. Even at her young age, she had acquired a valuable nugget of wisdom and has never again purposely inserted a foreign object into any electrical outlet.
When we give in to temptation, ignoring God's truth, the result is always sin. Attached to that sin is the hefty price tag of painful consequences. Every choice we make - every action that we take has consequences. We can ignore those consequences or learn from them, taking to heart the message God has assigned to them and gain the wisdom that they hold.
Everyone in the Garden of Eden had consequences. Eve's wrong choices led to pain in childbirth, subjection to her husband's authority and the loss of her perfect world. Adam forfeited his "cushy" job to discover that growing food would require a lot of sweat and hard work. The fertile ground would grow only thorns and he, too, would be thrown out of the garden. Death for man and animals became a reality and the serpent was doomed to crawl in the dust forever, facing the hatred of all men as well as judgment and death.
The story is told of a young man who, at the age of thirty-two, was appointed President of the bank. He had never dreamed that he would become president at all - much less at such a young age. So he approached the Chairman of the Board, a man known for his wisdom, and asked, "You know, I've just been appointed President and was wondering if you could give me some advice." The old man came back with just two words, "Right decisions!" The young man had hoped for a bit more than this. "That's really helpful and I appreciate it," he said, "but can you be more specific? For example, how do I make right decisions?" The wise old man pondered the question for a moment then simply responded, "Experience." Growing impatient, the young man said, "Well, that's why I am here. I don't have the kind of experience I need. How do I get it?" The terse reply quickly came, "Wrong decisions!"
Wise people accept the consequences of sin and learn from their wrong choices and then apply those lessons to their lives. God honors a life of applied truth and will provide His wisdom and understanding as we follow and obey Him.
Let's Pray
Father, I want Your wisdom for my life. Please help me examine every choice that I make today in the light of Your truth.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
Now It's Your Turn
• Accept the fact that temptation will come. What temptations are you facing today?
• Get ready and stay ready to face temptation by reading and memorizing Scripture. Start with John 3:16.
• When you sin, accept the consequences and learn the lessons of that wrong choice. Read and memorize 1 John 1:9. Look for opportunities to apply your newly gained wisdom by changing an attitude and/or behavior

I Don't Feel Like It!
Mary Southerland
Today's Truth
Proverbs 25:28 (NIV) "Like a city whose walls are broken down is a man who lacks self-control."
Friend To Friend
You have probably discovered that you simply cannot trust your emotions because they are unreliable, misleading and will constantly betray you. A family member verbally blasts you and rage consumes your spirit. Your career is in decline and depression slithers into your heart. Caught in the comparison trap, you find yourself avoiding those who have bigger, more influential jobs. Anger is a constant companion, finances are tight and rest is a distant memory. A sense of bone-deep weariness saturates your soul as your own heart ridicules the sincerity with which you serve. "You might as well give up. It's no use. Just quit!" the enemy taunts.
Negative emotions can take hold of and destroy a life void of emotional control. Control puts emotions in their God-shaped place, discarding negative emotions as the spiritual leeches they are while safeguarding and reinforcing positive emotions. I am amazed at the number of women who base eternal decisions on feelings while seeking confirmation and even direction from emotional responses. I almost missed one of the highest plans for my life because it didn't feel right.
My husband, Dan, was Youth Pastor at Sheridan Hills Baptist, a dynamic church in Hollywood, Florida where Bill Billingsley, one of the greatest men I have ever known, was senior pastor. He and his amazing wife, Betty Jean, had an enormous impact on me personally, and the ministry of speaking and writing to which God has now called me. It was in the midst of my God ordained transformation at Sheridan Hills and the youth program's greatest growth that Dan dropped the bomb - he felt God calling him back to Southwestern Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. Well, I felt God calling him to stay put!
I loved Sheridan Hills! It was home! Going back to seminary meant I would have to go back to teaching elementary school fulltime. Teaching wasn't the problem but placing our young son, Jered, in daycare. We had waited so long for this chosen baby, and the thought of relegating his care to strangers broke my heart. How could this possibly be God's plan when it felt so wrong?
My favorite worship time at Sheridan Hills was the Wednesday night service - for two reasons. I enjoyed the contemporary worship and in-depth bible teaching. I also treasured the fact that, each week, while Dan was in meetings and Jered was in the nursery, I could slip into the empty, darkened auditorium for an hour of solitude.
However, the Wednesday night after Dan shared the numbing probability of our return to seminary, my usually refreshing solitude dissolved into a tantrum of crying, praying and pleading with God to let us stay at Sheridan Hills.
When a hand gently patted my shoulder, I looked up into the tear-filled eyes of my pastor. "I have something to tell you," he said. Pastor Billingsley was not only a spiritual mentor in my life, but a loving father figure as well. Expecting a word of wisdom or encouragement, I was shattered by his words, "I have cancer." Speechless, we sat in pain-filled silence, weeping; each flailing in our own sea of emotions and questions. Bill Billingsley then spoke the words that have guided my steps from the moment he gave them life. "Mary, just remember that God's will penalizes no one."
I immediately knew I had a choice to make. I could mulishly hold on to my emotional comfort or submit to God's will. My choice to obey God plotted the course for an incredible journey filled with purpose, a life of sharing God's hope and healing with women across the world through speaking and writing. Had my emotions ruled, I would have missed God's best for my life.
Emotions are a gift from God. While emotions themselves are not sin, the place we give them can be. Since God created us with the capacity for strong emotions, we can rest assured that He will equip and empower His plan for managing them.
Let's Pray
Father, I come to You, honestly and sincerely asking You to be in control of my emotions. I live too many days dictated by how I "feel." I am so sorry, Lord. Forgive me for not allowing the Holy Spirit to have free reign in my heart and mind. Please help me live a life marked with peace and with hope.
In Jesus' name,
Amen.
Now It's Your Turn
Take an emotional inventory. What negative emotion has become a hindrance in your life? Why?
Think about the way you begin each day. Are you afraid of what the day holds? Do you dread facing whatever comes your way? Or do you focus on God and His promises?
Read and memorize the following promises of God:
• Philippians 4:6-7 (ICB) "Do not worry about anything. But pray and ask God for everything you need. And when you pray, always give thanks. And God's peace will keep your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. The peace that God gives is so great that we cannot understand it."
• Colossians 3:2 (NIV) "Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things."
• Proverbs 29:11 (NKJ) "A fool vents all his feelings, but a wise man holds them back."
More From The Girlfriends
When emotions are out of control, the result is stress. Stress is one of the enemy's favorite weapons. Stress has caused physical pain, emotional darkness and spiritual bankruptcy in my life. I constantly have to bring my heart and mind back to God. I know how hard it is to stay balanced and at peace. Know you are not alone, friend. We are with you and praying for you.

Then Neither do I Condemn You
Sharon Jaynes
Today's Truth
"Then neither do I condemn you," Jesus declared. "Go now and leave you life of sin" (John 8:11 NIV).
Friend to Friend
Remember the story of the woman caught in adultery recorded in John 8:1-11? If you aren't familiar with it, stop right now and read it for yourself. The Pharisees had brought this half-dressed woman to Jesus right in the middle of his teaching and tried to snare him in a trap. Should she be stoned or set free?
As this woman listened to the Pharisee's question Jesus, she understood his dilemma. If he set her free, the Pharisees would accuse him of ignoring the Law of Moses and deem him a heretic. If he sentenced her to death by stoning, then his teachings of grace and forgiveness would be negated.
The religious leaders already held the stones in their clenched fists, anticipating his reply. Their hearts were as hard as the rocks they held in their hands. But rather than give a quick answer, Jesus moved his gaze from the trembling woman and stooped to the ground. With his finger, the very hand of God-made-man, he began writing in the dirt. A frigid chill swept through the Pharisees pious robes. Suddenly they felt the rawness of naked exposure as Jesus' eyes looked up at each of them and without a word, uncloaked their sinful thoughts and desires. With one look from Jesus, they stood soul bare and more exposed than the half-clad woman before them.
Everyone held their breath. The silence was deafening. The tension was palpable. Finally, Jesus rose and delivered the verdict.
"If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her."
Then Jesus squatted once again and continued to write.
One-by-one the Pharisees unclenched their fists, dropped the stones, and filtered through the crowd. The older men who had accumulated a longer list of sins turned to leave first, with the younger ones not far behind.
After the last of the Pharisees cleared the scene, Jesus straightened up and asked her, "Woman, where are your accusers? Has no one condemned you?"
"No one, sir," she replied.
"Then neither do I condemn you," Jesus declared. "Go now and leave your life of sin."
Now, let's bring this story home. Imagine yourself standing before God on your day of judgment. You know all that you have done. Satan is pacing back and forth reading your long list of sins. But then Jesus steps forward and takes the list from the accuser. Looking over the accusations he begins: "I paid for this one, and this one, and this one, and this one...."
Finally, reaching the end of Satan's meticulously penned and amazingly accurate enumeration of all your shortcomings, Jesus begins to tear the paper into shreds. He cups the pieces of the destroyed list of failures in his nail-scarred hands and then, with the breath of grace, blows them as far as the east is from the west. Wiping his hands together as if completing a work, he glances back over to the Judge, "All gone," he says with a smile.
Satan grumbles under his sulfurous breath, and slinks back to his darkened cave - foiled again.
God looks up and asks you, "Has no one condemned you?"
"No one, sir," you reply.
"Then enter my eternal kingdom and find rest."
Friend, if you have accepted Jesus as your Lord and Savior, and if you are still feeling condemned, know that condemnation is not coming from God. Our enemy, the devil or Satan, is called the "accuser of the brothers," and he is the accuser of the sisters as well. The Bible tells us that he marches before God accusing believers night and day. (Revelation 12:11). "She did this and that and that and this and that," he hisses.
And God' replies "Really? I don't remember? There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus."
Then He looks at you with a welcoming smile.
Let's Pray
Dear God, Thank You for forgiving me of my sins. Thank You for washing me clean. Thank You that when the enemy accuses me before You, Jesus steps forward to announce He's paid my debt and set me free.
In Jesus' Name,
Amen.

Sometimes I Feel So Overlooked

Lysa TerKeurst

"After removing Saul, he made David their king. He testified concerning him: 'I have found David son of Jesse a man after my own heart, he will do everything I want him to do.'" Acts 13:22 (NIV)

Devotion:

I'm sorry. I try not to complain very often. I do know that I am incredibly blessed to have a grocery store down the street and a washer and dryer to use when doing laundry. But sometimes I wake up on Monday mornings a little grumpy. Time to do it all again. I'll go buy food that gets eaten. I'll wash clothes that get dirty again. I'll sweep floors that just an hour later will be littered with crumbs.

Is there more to all this than just doing the tasks of everyday life?

Before I jumped into the normal routine this morning, I sat with Jesus. And this is what I found... some big truths by taking a little glance at David's life. Despite how other's saw him, his own propensity to sin, and his lack of position in his own family, David had the sweet reassurance of God and that was enough.

Overlooked by everyone else. Handpicked by God.

To his older brothers, he was a pest. To his father Jesse, he was just the youngest son. To on-lookers, he was just a shepherd boy. But to God, he was the one destined to be king. And not just any king. His lineage was the one from whom Jesus would come.

Overlooked by everyone else. Handpicked by God.

Even how he was anointed to be the future king is such a telling story. In 1 Samuel 16, God tells Samuel that He has rejected Saul as king and chosen one of Jesse's sons to be the replacement. Think of the list of qualifications that must have run through Samuel's head as he pondered which of Jesse's sons would be qualified for such a position: tall, smart, articulate, brave, groomed, well mannered, regal, a natural born leader. "But the Lord said to Samuel, 'Do not consider his outward appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. (meaning Saul who had these qualities.) The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart" (vs 7).

Overlooked by everyone else. Handpicked by God.

Next Samuel has Jesse line all of his sons up before him. All of them were to be looked at. Yet Jesse doesn't call David in from tending sheep. Was this an oversight? An assumption? A judgment call? A necessity? A deliberate choice?

Overlooked by everyone else. Handpicked by God.

Samuel passes on each of Jesse's sons and then asks, "Are these all the sons you have?"

I imagine Jesse with a quizzical expression replying, "There is still the youngest but he is tending sheep." Surely one who spends his time taking care of animals is not the one to take care of a nation.

Overlooked by everyone else. Handpicked by God.

As soon as Samuel saw him, he knew he was the one. David was anointed to become king. But he was not immediately ushered to the throne. It was years before David would be recognized by the world. So, where did he go after being anointed as king? To a refining school? A government academy? Military training? Nope.

He went back out into the fields and continued to shepherd his flock. A king doing lowly tasks. A king whose character was being refined in the fields of everyday life to prepare him for his calling.

How like us. In the midst of smelly laundry, dirty dishes, snotty noses, misplaced keys, overdue library books, bills, and that birthday gift that still needs to be mailed to grandma - there is training there. There is character building. There is attitude shaping. There is soul defining. There is heart grounding. All which must take place for us to become what God intends.

Ever feel overlooked by the world? Take heart sister - we are handpicked by God.

I am not just doing tasks. I am building a legacy. I am shaping God's kingdom. I am in the process of not only discovering my calling but that of my family as well. And I don't know about you, but it sure does make me look at my everyday tasks, even the smelly laundry in a whole different light.

Dear Lord, thank You that even when I feel overlooked, I can rest in the fact that I am handpicked by You. Help me to live my life for an audience of One. In Jesus' Nam

Stop! In the Name of Love

Sharon Jaynes

Today's Truth
"Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering," (Mark 5:34 NIV).

Friend To Friend
"Gone. All gone."

For twelve long years, she had been bleeding. Over 4,380 days. Lydia had gone from doctor to doctor to try and stop the flow, but as the years progressed she only worsened. Each day was a reminder of the emptiness she felt as her very life ebbed from her body.

"I've lost my family, my friends, my energy and now all my money. My very womanhood, the ability to conceive and suckle a child at my breast flows out of my body and leaves me a barren wasteland. And the pain? The constant cramping feels as though my womb is being squeezed by an invisible hand.

"'Unclean.' That's what the priests say I am. No one is supposed to even touch me unless they are willing to go through a cleansing process afterwards. The house I live in, the chair I sit in, the utensils I cook with - all ceremonially unclean. Oh how I long for a human touch. A hug. A kiss. A pat on the back. A baby's cheek against my own."

"Oh, God," Lydia prayed. "There is nothing else for me to do. I've tried everything. Only a miracle will set me free from this life of isolation."

God smiled down at his daughter of Abraham and noticed her name on Jesus' celestial day-timer. Today was the day.

Sitting all alone in a darkened room, she heard a ruckus outside her window.

"It's Jesus!" Someone shouted. "Jesus is coming!"

"Jesus," she whispered to herself. "Maybe he could heal me. I know I'm not supposed to go out in public. Certainly I cannot speak to this man or any man on the street. What can I do?"

Quickly, she devised a plan. She wrapped a veil around her face with only enough of an opening for her eyes to peer out. She snuck out of her home and merged with the throng of people trying to catch a glimpse of the much-acclaimed healer and teacher. Gathering all the courage she could muster, she pushed her way through the crowd in hopes of getting close enough just to touch the hem of his robe.

"Jesus!" a man called from the crowd. Like the parting of the sea, the multitude gave way for the synagogue ruler to pass. Everyone knew Jarius. He was important.

Jesus turned as Jarius fell at his feet and begged. "My little daughter is dying," he began. "Please come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live."

The woman looked on as Jesus extended his hand to this distraught father, compassionately helped him to his feet, and apparently changed course to go with him. It was then that she made her move.

Shoring up courage and confidence, Lydia began muttering to her self, "If I can just touch his clothes, I will be healed. I know it. I just know it. I can't let this opportunity slip away." While unsure of herself, she was confident in Him. Her faith overcame her fear and she pressed forward.

Like a runner stretching for the finish line, the woman reached through the crowd and brushed her fingers against the hem of his garment. Just as her faith reached out to touch Jesus, God's healing power reached down to touch her. Immediately, she felt a surge of power flow through her body and the flow of blood come to a halt.

She knew it. She felt it. The flow stopped ... and then Jesus stopped.

"Who just touched my clothes?" he asked.

The woman kept her eyes fixed to the ground as a jumble of thoughts scrambled through her mind. I'm unclean and not supposed to be out in public. I'm not supposed to touch anyone. What am I going to do? If I remove my veil people with recognize me. I'm not supposed to talk to a man in public. She wanted to run, but her feet were suddenly rooted to the ground.

"You see the people crowding against you," his disciples answered, "and yet you can ask, 'Who touched me?'"

Jesus ignored the disciples' comments and continued to pan the crowd in search of the person who had purposely touched his robe. He felt the power flow from his body like a current. He knew what had happened. Jesus can always sense the difference between the press of the curious and the touch of the faithful.

Silence hung like a cloud. No one said a word.

Finally, she couldn't hold it in any longer. She turned to Jesus and fell at his feet. With trembling voice, a geyser of gratitude and confession gushed forth.

"Master, I have had an issue of blood for over twelve years. I have gone from doctor to doctor and no one has been able to help me. I've lost my family, my friends and my finances. But when I heard that you were passing through, I just knew that you, O Lord, that you could heal me. I know I'm not supposed to touch anyone. I know that I am unclean in all regards. Please forgive me for the intrusion. But Jesus, what I have to tell you is this! I am healed! As soon as I touched the hem of your robe, the blood ceased to flow! Thank you, Jesus. Thank you, Jesus."

While others began to back away from her "uncleanness," Jesus reached forward and embraced her faith.

"Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering."

Let's Pray
Dear Heavenly Father, thank You that when I feel alone and forgotten, You see me. Thank you for sending Jesus my way. Even though others may desert me, You always draw me near.

In Jesus' Name,
Amen
