Decided to trade one 'bad' habit for a good one! Instead of my usual pick-me-up afternoon cocktail, I'm going to use that time to workout instead . . . and THEN reward myself with the cocktail, lol. It should be a solid habit by Halloween!!! If so, I'm going to reward myself with a teeth-whitening kit : )

Starting later is def. helping me. Since I moved in with my bf who always keeps beer in the fridge, and rum on hand, I really have to fight the temptation, but I force myself to wait till dinner now. Helps our relationship too since I don't work or anything it was kinda irking him to come home from work to see me drink in hand, lol.

Got started late last night, which really helped the two drink - then stop deal. It's only shortly after 3pm here now and am contemplating a beverage. Starting this early would totally mess up any intention of having two....I'd better wait! But those tequila sunrises were so refreshing and tasty!

Guess I'll argue with myself a little while longer.

Yeah, vodka hits me hard also. I'm trying to avoid it these days. I'm also having to give up the beers for the most part. They are just too fattening. I am going to allow myself maybe one or two a day when my boyfriend is over, but instead of having one with dinner I'm going back to my unsweetened tea and if I want something after dinner I'll just make myself a light rum drink or something.

GAG! Not sure what got into me Thursday evening except to much vodka. Felt like crap all day Friday and figured "hair of the dog" would do the trick. That was one big hairy dog - feel worse than crap this morning. Two days in a row? What was I thinking?

Need to go to work and sweat it out.

Wow, reflecting back on the last 4-5 days, I've still managed to remain moderate if barely having anything to drink at all. Managing to get some things accomplished around the house as well as tick off some things on the list of things to do which have seriously been procrastinated!

AF is probably not in my near future, but what a huge difference having 1 or 2 drinks makes!

I got through my crisis without too many binges and now have discovered the joy of beer which is easier for me to moderate since I get a lil heavy handed when I try to mix drinks. I also don't care for it all that much so it's easier to sip instead of guzzle : )

It's so true that we find other things to do to switch to AF days and get so much more done in the process, which then translates into feeling even better about our accomplishments!

I'm finding that putting myself on a schedule in the afternoon & evenings (like a three year old) makes things much easier. Instead of coming home after a hard day at work and flopping on the couch & turning on the TV, I've been doing one or two household tasks. (Yesterday was dusting the living room & clean the bathroom.) Eating dinner by 5:30 or so, leaving no dishes in the sink after dinner. Having a leisurely evening walk, shower...and the next thing I know it's after 7pm and guess who's still sober? LOL, why it's taken this long to figure out the boredom factor in relation to drinking is beyond me. Maybe it's something I keep re-learning over & over again.

It's been a horrible week with the ex. He all of a sudden thinks I'm hot and I can't stomach him after what he did. Does help moderate the drinking though, so that's a plus. Can't wait for the madness to end.

I had drinks all weekend... bought my 26oz of Vodka Lime and Wine coolers and it seems once I buy them I have to finish them off lol... but over 3 days so not bad. Going to be AF for the weekdays and see what this weekend brings.

I've been getting out and doing a lot and have outings planned for Saturday and Sunday involving driving ... so that equals no drinking emoticon

Thats so funny, i was binging a bit myself. But I am really pleased that I had fun and didn't do anything I really regret. I can't say I'm binge free, but the binges are definately getting less severe. It seems the driving force behind mine are acute lonliness. The alcohol gives me more confidence to call people up and socialize more. That's a good thing, but Ill be glad when I don't need the alcohol to get where i wanna be. But all in all it's good practice I think. I'm learning to play rather than morbidly drinking to get comfortably numb. I really think i can do this : ) And going to throw in some AF days this week also : )

Okay so going to post on this thread tonight since I have decided to enjoy some drinks tonight... my plan is to have a few but I'll be in bed early like usual and up early to have a full day.

I had hoped to get through the rest of the month AF but think I deserve a night 'off'.

I struggle with AF and trying to hit that 'number' but going to stop obsessing. When I was successful in my greater weight loss (down to 144lbs)... I always had my 'cheat' night - the important thing is to not let it go into a "drinking binge streak".

Happy Friday all!

Robbyn, I have been impressed with your progress in the area of the 'dating'... Enjoy!

Glad to hear the texting ended up getting you closer...

Oh and the watering down trick - been doing it for years and now if I go out and drink a straight drink, well you can be sure I sip (it tastes too strong for me lol)

Watering down the booze! What a capital idea!! I also measure. When I see the calories I tend to moderate. As for the drunk texting, that worked out okay. In the end, we got closer : )

I pour red wine into a liquid measuring cup 6 oz at a time so I can track the calories. Sometimes, say if I've budgeted 18 oz wine calories for the day, I will pour all 18 oz into the measuring jug and put the rest of the bottle away so I know that's my ration for the evening. If I'm drinking white wine, i'll top off the measuring jug with some sparkling water to add a little volume. Another trick is tiny wine glasses.

Well I think I'll join in (even though I hope to hit a target of AF days for the next little while)... I can share that my drinks are not measured however, I am pretty sure I am within the '1 shot' range.

What I do is when I buy my Vodka Lime, I take another bottle of equal size (26oz) and cut it half and half with water. So when I pour it into my glass (a tall one filled with ice) I put about 1 inch or 1.5 inches of diluted vodka and mix it with diet pepsi. Now how many of these do I have when I drink... well it varies. Before I'd finish a 26oz in a night (which was really a mickey). Now I usually only drink maybe 1/3 and I'm done.

My days of worrying about my excessive drinking have really improved since joining this team. What we learn from each other's experiences is great! Thanks everyone for being open to sharing your own experiences.

I really should visit this thread more, sounds right up my alley. I have been good lately but last night was a big moderation FAIL. And yeah I can relate about the portion sizes, my "glass" of wine is really like 2 or 3 red wine servings. Not good. Also my "shots" are more like 2 or 3 as well. I always hate myself the next morning bc I feel like crap, although that is getting better.

I'm turning a corner I think. Had a fairly destructive binge and ended up drunk texting a guy I really like and he will probably lose a lot of respect for me for that. We haven't talked since, so I'm really nervous about the whole thing, but resolved to let it go either way. Still, all in all, it was less of a binge than I had before my moderation plan.
Was proud of myself last night. Had to go shopping with ex who is always hitting on me and made it a point not to drink even though the extended time with him gave me a raging headache.
Realized too my 'moderation' plan needs some fine tuning. Decided to throw in some AF days but I'm not going to deprive myself to desperation drinking either. Just going to roll with it for a while and see how I feel.

So easy to spell, difficult to say and follow through with the "doing" of NO!

Thanks for the encouragement. I had gone through a phase of having to finish an open bottle if it was staring at me. Easily oen bottle a night so I have made progress.

I just find it frustrating that I can moderate or have an AF day or two and then one day it just goes out the window. I just have to learn to say no a little louder.

Hey Mamabug
In my world making a bottle of wine last for 3 days is pretty close to moderation I would say!
Give yourself some credit for that! I can remember a time where I would have "cleaned up" the bottle the same night ... so you could be a lot worse of I think.

Managed one glass of wine for the whole evening. And made memorable dinner, did not indulge, and DID NOT clean up the rest of the stuff in the kitchen. I have bought a lot of small tupperware containers - which makes it easier. It goes into a tupperware for a couple of days in the fridge, gets forgotten, adapts the look of a kiwi (green & hairy) and then gets thrown out. This is what works for me - I still have huge trouble with throwing food away. I had so few money in my youth that I remember many days being hungry.
But back to why I started this response. 5 course meal, lots of preparations, hubbys business colleage and family - normally alcohol would have gotten me through the cooking part as well - just to "get an overview and clear the head and calm down the heat". So all in all a good day emoticon

I'm still upset about my latest binge. And thinking about the pattern it represented.
* It revealed a couple of ppl in my life were toxic.
* It brought to a head a situation with my ex but that still remains unresolved and probably can't be 'solved,' so I'm going to have to practice being assertive and firm on my position without fear and without aggression.
* The frustration that triggered this outburst was created by my going about the right thing in the wrong way. I need to focus my efforts and realize the journey is as important as the destination.
* Part of my resentment is based on the fact that I've reached my 'goal' weight but still don't have the perfect body/life/mate.
* I need to resume my daily gratitude list and remember happy comes from the inside, not the outside.
* Think about what alcohol is supposed to do for me and learn to moderate it so it meets those goals and stop when I start to 'o.d.'
* Make sure I get enough rest, excersize and sunshine everyday so I don't feel like 'self-medication.'
* Accept transitions and embrace new beginnings.

That's a cool idea! I'm still riding the moderation wave and having much less binge behavior. The only binges I have had recently were triggered by trying to deprive myself and once out of sublimation for a situation I need to get a handle on. Or at least my reaction to it : )

It's been so busy & stressful with work, every night has been a couple drinks to settle this restless girl down. Another excuse? Probably, but at least the brain gets in motion and reminds me to stop at a couple, because over hang in the AM doesn't work with work!

LOL, last night at nearly 9pm I decided to make Coach Nicole's Mini Veggie Fritatta's to keep hands busy. Easy recipe, tastes good, low cal and had dinner ready for tonight.

Last night was a winner. First time I have addressed travel uneasiness with a looong walk in the dark i some neighbourhood, I brought some travel companions which ment that I thought is should be pretty safe. Normally I would not do that when travelling alone. But managed all night without an urge to go for a liquerstore to get a bottle for keeping it in my room. Just a long walk, some dinner around 10 pm and into bed :-)
Now on to work at the facility.

Well, that night I managed to polish off the bottle of wine I'd open the night before then get into some Grand Marnier...not so inspiring.

Guess what bugs me is no matter if it's a day I work or a day off, I find myself watching the clock....come on 5 o'clock, get here so I can have a drink. What is it about that "magical" hour? If I can occupy myself until 5pm, then side track myself making a salad for another hour, why not for the rest of the night?

It's my evening cocktail hour battle. Some night's are winners, some nights - well, not so much.

I had another binge, but it wasn't as bad as it could have been. I'm starting to cut back on my daily intake also. This week I'm going to write everything down since it's faster than logging in and track that way for a while and then work out some sustainable dosage .
Good work CarolAnn. You are inspiring!

Sounds like you are learning from your process!

Just found myself thinking...yay, it's 5:05 pm, I can have a glass of red or a corona now. Think I'll choppy chop a salad & cook the pasta and wait until 6pm to decide of a beverage of choice, if at all. But ya know, with pasta and marinara plus home made meatballs, a glass of red sure is nice! Managed to keep it at 4.5 oz last night, so things are progressing well!

Made a list yesterday of the signs I had been drinking too much. THought I'd make a list today of the signs of my progress:
* Haven't drank to the point of hangover for awhile.
* Stayed reasonably within caloric ranges even when drinking.
* Did my yoga even though I drank the night before.
* Booze is lasting a long time.
* Don't get that 'point of no return' feeling.
* Haven't blacked out since I started my moderation plan.
* Don't feel so trapped like I did on AF days.
* Stick to mixed drinks, etc. dont' feel such in a rush to catch a buzz.

Learning to see the cues when I am having to much and putting the brakes on much sooner. Just like I did with food a year ago...
signals include:
* ravenous hunger
* drunk dialing/texting/e-mailing
* drinking straight shots
* dancing to stay awake
* compulsion to finish a bottle
* changing clothes for no reason
* smoking more than usual
* dropping things, stumbling

Really proud of my progress. I had a highly stressful and disappointing week-- and had booze in the house and didn't over-indulge as much as I used to. Kept pretty much to my daily allotment and didn't binge to the point of no return even on my worst day : )
Still working on threading in the AF day without feeling deprived, etc. Probably has more to dealing with the stressors that make me want to drink than the actual drinks themselves.
Onward and upward!!

Yeah, self-flaggelation is overrated and doesn't burn as many calories as dancing : )
I'm doing better with my moderation plan. So far a bottle of rum that would have lasted me one night is going on day 3 and only half empty. Plus, I started logging in the calories and am thinking in terms of overall daily comsumption, etc.
I don't feel the urge to binge which is nice and I think eventually I'll be able to thread in some AF days. Once I get over the novelty of always having booze in the house. Just like I don't have to eat cookies because they are in the house or scarf down pancakes just because I made them for the kids. It's just another 'junk' food : )

Totally blew it last night. Double whammy: the vacation rental I cleaned left a half of a huge bottle of Grey Goose vodka on top of today being the first day off in over three weeks. Well, the goose & I got to be good friends....I was still up and going at 7am. It was more than moderate, but certainly not out of the park whacko.

It's amazing isn't it how smaller amounts of alcohol, just like smaller amounts of food, are becoming more satisfying now that we are filling our lives with other healthier habits?
I'm still on the moderation train. Very pleased to find it is working and I was able to work through a huge mama drama without over-indulging which served me well on several fronts.
One of the things that I think is helping is that I'm planning the drinks and using mixers instead of just letting things build up and happen.
Today is kind of a test because I'm out of booze and the question is will I drag my tired butt off the couch and go to the store and stock up or deprive myself and risk the binge later?

Good for you for not letting it get away from you. I am still working toward the AF thing, did really well the first week, then had a couple of setbacks, but like you, I didn't go out and get blasted like I normally would have, in fact, only had 1 beer one night, and that was enough for me...amazing, never happens!!

Good luck Friday. I am so glad that I am out of the dating scene, I can't imagine how difficult it is.

Well, the best laid plans got derailed. I got stood up (he called to say he was hung up and didn't get back to me till late and by then i had blown him off).
So I ended up getting a bigger buzz than I had planned on, but not a real blow out binge so I'm kinda proud of that.
I'm also experimenting with having smaller amounts of alcohol on a more daily basis and so far that seems to be working for me. I don't feel so deprived.
My goal now is to get through 1 week without a binge.
I have another date Friday, so again will focus on pacing myself. Pretty sure I won't get stood up this time since I've been out with this guy before and he was very punctual and sweet. Professional guy, single dad, my age, lol.

Let us know how things went! Date stuff can be nerve wracking...settle in and be yourself - picture Sacre Blue (Holy Batman) and be the mod girl you are!

I know you can do it. Heck, if I can go alcohol free for a week, you can do this.

i'm going to try to really watch myself this time because i'm going out with a guy i really like and don't want to get drunk, just cop a friendly buzz. i'm thinking i'll have a pina colada frozen before dinner and tea with dinner and maybe split a 6 pack after dinner at my place since that is what he likes to drink. i blew it last time and was so nervous i downed 3 beers in about an hour and then started slugging shots of kaluah and then opened a pinot grigio--- and then had to tell him to leave because i was about to puke on him. thank goodness he was nice about it and when i appologized the next day he just said :"that's okay sweetie, s = = = happens" but i really don't want to sabatoge things (see my blog) I want to play with the human : ) I'm also planning that if I am nervous again and find myself drinking the beer too fast that I'll alerternate with water bottles. That might make me pee alot but it's got to be more lady like than being all trashed and barf-y.

That is my plan, after Lent is over. I figure that this gives me a month and a half to retrain my brain a bit.

I'm going to continue to be mod! Moderate, measure and not over do things.

Between adjusting to the single life, new & unexpected work issues....there will be no time to go over board and feel yucky the next day.

Which is all really good for the pocket book, waist line and over all well being.

I am giving it up altogether, although there will be one day that I do drink, probably, because I will be going out with friends to a concert. But, today I haven't had anything to drink, and I don't feel too bad about it.

Good luck to you, I will look forward to seeing you around here more too.

Windstar, myhusband and I are giving up alcohol M-F for Lent (and dairy and meat) so I'll be on Spark a lot more. I already am. It's good to have that structure.

I think that was the point of the challenge...see, when I pour a glass of wine, I never measure it, and I have a HUGE glass...so the challenge is to actually use the correct size glass, or measure the drink...my mom pours a "shot" of vodka for a drink, but her shots are about 3, and I never counted it that way, I just said "one drink". Now I am going to count. Of course, having decided to attempt to give up alcohol for Lent, I will have to start that after Easter, but I plan to do it!

Even when I'm not tracking my nutrition, I always measure my drinks. It's the only way to keep honest.

I saw a thread this morning that made me realize I have truly not been paying enough attention to you guys. Here's your Sacrebleu Challenge, that is a great idea. Measuring drinks is a great way to keep track of your calories. Back in January TZippy04 suggested this thread, and I am starting it. Perhaps she can chime in with exactly what the challenge will be.
