On the path to losing weight, many people spend a lot of time envisioning the skinny life. They might assume that shedding pounds will be a surefire path to overall health and happiness, and that once they reach that magic number on the scale, they'll slide comfortably into their new skin. Maybe they imagine themselves buying a new wardrobe, finally wearing a bikini at the beach, receiving a clean bill of health following every checkup and enjoying all of the perks and pursuits their excess weight has kept at bay.
 
In reality, losing a significant amount of weight comes with a few curveballs along the way. For every expected advantage, there might be a handful of "a-ha" moments—some pleasant, some not so much.

Very entertaining article & comment section. I too am hoping to once again avoid feeling overheated from carrying too much fat. I am down 30 lbs altho' not yet near goal & a few people have commented positively.
What I need to adjust is my expectation that once I'm again skinny (& I once was, not just slim but underweight) that I won't magically be younger again also. That sad reality is part of the current struggle. However I am very determined to get healthy & fit once more by making this lifestyle change. ETHYLMERZ is wrong. Eating healthy food can taste great, it just might take more effort like making it yourself especially desserts. I find that even tho' I still have a sweet tooth, I rarely crave junk anymore & when I do it's momentary. Faux ice cream from frozen bananas is truly satisfying w/ all that fiber. When I want fat I eat guacamole, PB, butter on my rye toast or a sweet potato, or simply a teaspoonful of coconut oil. I also will drizzle olive oil over roasted root vegetables or oven baked garlic fries. None is as quick & easy as when you're out & about & faced w/ those options so yes, daily I choose to do what's best for me. It can be tough so I am embracing my stubbornness & determination along w/ enlisting all the helpful tips & support from the Sparker community. It's why tracking is so important for me. I access the site, track & start working thru the points. Read these articles, utilize the info, hints & reminders. Some days it will apply more than others but overall, I appreciate SP for helping me to learn more about myself during this journey cuz one day next year I want to achieve my goal weight. Relationships never seem to be the same after a large weight loss - suddenly everyone wants to comment on my food choices, on every ounce I gain or lose, etc. Before they didn't comment at all. Report

Because you were. Keep that in mind when you receive "compliments", so you can always remember who is being sincere and who is not...

Anyone who only gives "compliments" on your appearance when you are skinny/have lost some amount of weight is as fake as their "compliment". Report
So far 50 pounds gone. The number 1 most important item is balanced blood sugar. I went from using 80 unit of insulin per day in 2 shots to 10 units 1 shot. I am looking forward to lowering and ending my other medications. My A1C was 5.9 without using 70 units of insulin. before it was 6.7 with the insulin. My doctor was so excited it was totally cute. First, I will never be skinny. I was shooting for healthy and that’s exactly where I am.

Second that dietician was very uninformed. Your skeletal frame remains constant, your bones don’t thin out. The fat on those bones decrease. You become thinner with exercise and strength training in your arms but your bones don’t thin out.

Otherwise, these are all very inspiring points. I am very close to goal, having lost 85 pounds and I realize that a change in lifestyle is a permanent part of keeping the weight off. Tracking, moderation and portion control, and exercise, repeat daily. Report
